Hi folks,

I've lived in Key West (a transplant from Wyoming, of all places) for the past two years. I do love it here, but I just cannot afford it anymore (now single, recent pay cut, etc., etc.). I'm looking for a small(ish) community somewhere on the coast of FL (or even NC or SC), maybe another island, but the problem is, I cannot take the time off to get out and see what's out there! PLEASE help, give me some leads. Here are the biggies I'm looking for:

Rent: Under $1,000/mo for 1 bedroom or studio.
Population: under 500,000
Crime: LOW or non-violent. Maybe one murder a year?
Median-Age range: Below 58 (I'm actually a 30-year-old single female who hopes to be able to mingle with others her age, and maybe snag a guy to marry SOMEDAY.)

Right now I'm just looking for some loose leads. Not worried about job markets at the moment, as I'll research the communities in that respect later. I will tell you, I'd love to find another place with a laid-back vibe, not much traffic, and friendly, trustworthy people. If that exists outside of the Keys. Also, a real country bar where the men KNOW how to dance (No, NOT line-dance) would be AWESOME! C'mon, it's got to be out there! Any suggestions??

Most people seem to move away to Central or Northern FL. Cape Coral is another popular region.

Some have moved to other states, usually GA, NC or TN.

what are you paying in rent right now? I've been throwing ideas in my head about moving there (for just a year to say I did it). And what do you do if I may ask?

Default What kind of work do you do?

I have lived several places in the Carolinas and in the Upper FL Keys. KW is expensive but that can be misleading when going to other places.

Maybe Charleston, SC, Wilmington, NC, New Bern, NC or the places the other posters have named in FL. There are some great areas in the state. If you move to NC or SC, you will have to start paying state income tax which knocks off a few percent of your income. Also, car insurance is cheaper in NC but not SC. Salaries are much lower in the Carolinas than what I have seen in the Keys.

Hope this helps.
