When I go to the beach, I carry two bags - a small one for collecting seashells and sea beans, and a larger one for collecting trash. I can't pick up ALL the trash I see (alas, there is too much of it) but would appreciate advice on which types of trash are the most potentially harmful to wildlife. I have been concentrating on smaller plastic items and anything that might be mistaken for food by a bird or fish. Any other suggestions on which kinds of litter are the most harmful to wildlife ?

I would have to say plastics like the small ones you pick up. Plastic bags I think would be another as well as fishing line. Good for you doing the right thing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have picked up several balloon pieces lately; not sure how these wind up on the beach. I have not seen any of the six-pack plastic rings on the beach yet but know they are especially deadly for entrapping animals.

I figure that if I am finding "treasures" on the beach (shells and such), the least I can do is thank Nature by doing some cleanup. And more than once, I have spotted a seabean or other nice tidbit that I would not have noticed if I wasn't headed to the trash can !

These things are the worst, luckily you don't see them very often as most cans are sold in 12 packs and are in cardboard boxes.
