Go to your county dog shelter. Ours is called Broward County Animal Care and Adoption center.

The small dogs go fast most have a green tag which mean there is a deposit on them and they are strays, if their owner does not claim them in 3 day they will be adopted out.

A way to prevent losing your dog forever and getting them returned is to get it microchipped, also you should register with your county and they will give you a tag for their collar.

So many cute pit bulls there (most common breed there) , they are not allowed where I live but my heart breaks knowing that they look at you wanting you to take them home.

I am trying to adopt a beautiful Yorkie that was a stray. If the owner does not claim him in 3 days he is mine. He looks well taken care of and he is not fixed or microchipped.

I don't understand why people don't get their animals micro chipped.

Some research suggests that the chips cause cancer.

I don't either, I think the benefit outweighs the small risk.

I guess they are too lazy and don't even know that pets have to be licensed in this area. Maybe if they decide they want to get rid of the dog one day it's a way to not have it tracked back to you. You can actually turn in your own dog as a stray in that case if you are heartless.

THe benefits definitely outweigh the small risk, we had our previous 4 dogs chipped w/ no problem whatsoever and our current dogs are chipped as well, it's no guarantee they'll be returned but it can help and provide proof of ownership as well.
