Why the gripe about "Northeasterners" considering they were the first to develop & populate most of SE Florida to begin with? Check your history and if it wasn't for Henry Flagler who was a Yankee and his Florida East Coast railroad it wouldn't have boomed the way it did. Flagler sold his resorts to wealthy Northeasterns who came and settled.
Trust me there wouldn't be a Palm Beach if not for Yankee money at the beginning of the 20th. century.

Thanks MiamiRob!

I am so sick of the constant Northerner bashing that goes on here. It's nice to read some positive comments for a change. Awesome!

So what do you suggest? Wipe everyone from the face of the earth?

You're Welcome! As I said before people seem to forget that most of Southeastern Florida was developed by Northerners to the point where the New York Times in the 1920's even declared Miami to be the "6th. Borough"!
This is why Florida doesn't resemble your typical "Southern" state. It's role in the Civil War & Slavery is negligible since most of the state was un populated during that era.

Florida under Spanish rule was a safe haven for black slaves and were granted freedom as long as they pledged to become Catholics. Florida was a "slave state" from 1845 when it became part of the US until the end of the Civil War in 1865 hence a mere 20 years.

By the way Spain sold Florida to the US for a mere $5 million dollars back then or basically the price of a cheap mansion in Palm Beach or a penthouse in Miami nowadays!

Just started reading the FL threads because my baby boomer parents have retired and are in the process of buying a home in central FL. They will be moving there in a few months from Long Island. They tried Charlotte and dislike it. I always had a sneaking suspicion that southerners are upset at the northern transplants, and it seems to be alive and well, at least on these forums anyway.

Just as another poster stated, I know several baby boomers staying in LI and buying into 55+ communities to stay close to family. I'm sure some native Floridians reading this will rejoice. I wanted my parents to do the same, but they'd rather a cheap SFH. They'll be moving close to my step-father's brother, who is also retired from NYC.

I'm sure you'll be getting a lot more interest though after this winter we've had. One of the worst I've ever seen.

Older middles class residents who have enough retirement funds to move to where it is warmer and "seems" to be retirement age friendly. Plus the State hasn't yet gone the way of CA, NY etc.

You may be surprised. I live in Michigan, one of the states that has been slammed the worst this winter, but it's funny because the people I hear over and over complaining about the weather and wishing to move somewhere warm tend to be the younger, working age people who have to get out and about in it everyday. The older people here who are of retirement age seem to be more stoic about it, and more accepting. I mean, they're still here, even though they are of an age where they don't have to worry about work or kids in school anymore and would be more free to leave if they chose to, right?

In light of that, it would seem that the demographic that most wants to escape the cold winters is the one that would need to find stable work in order to do so, and I'm not sure that the job market in Florida could sustain all of these wannabe transplants. You can't support yourself without a job, so they may have to just keep on dreaming. Besides, we do have beautiful weather from April-October, and people here tend to forget surprisingly quickly how bad the winter was once the flowers start blooming and the lawn mowers start humming...

My dh and I are middle-aged and just returned from a week in Florida a few days ago. No worries about us adding to the transplant woes and hustle and bustle, though. I like Florida well enough for a one week getaway, but home is where the heart is.

Because after getting annoyed at their home state's politics/taxes, they want to come here with the same views and recreate the scenario here.

The perpetual utopian chasers. "OH, THIS TIME (or THIS PLACE) our methods will WORK!"

Everybody knows the history. So what? Back THEN our Federalist system was still more in place, which is a major problem today with big central planning government.

So you don't mind paying those taxes in FLORIDA and having your Big Gulps monitored, and having the hospitals refuse to provide infant formula information to new mothers unless the people BEG for it.....as long as it's WARM??? IS THAT why they're moving here????

Next some geniuses will want to introduce state income tax. I think anybody who voted for the new Socialist mayor in NYC should be prohibited from leaving. Just like Cuba, like he'd like to do.

That's exactly why they have money. They put their cash into investments and things that appreciate in value rather than flashy cars and other consumer crap that always flush cash down the depreciation hole.
