These are not positives, folks!

We came to Florida with the idea that it would be as far away from Texas as we could get w/o growing gills and living in the ocean, and this place already has the most dangerous drivers I have ever seen in my life. Doesn't Florida already lead the nation in pedestrian and cyclist deaths? I thought nothing those air heads in Tallahassee could do would surprise me, but they just keep on, keeping on, up there. Plenty of late night material for Colbert inside those senate chambers. Only, if you live here, it ain't funny.
except the facts contradict you

Because the amount of Pedestrians and Cyclist on Alligator Alley and the Florida Turnpike should be major issues to consider.

Correlation does not imply causation. Cars and roads are safer now than 20 years ago.

Having said that, I don't think this increase makes any significant difference. Well I hope not. Florida drivers are so awful it doesn't really matter what the speed limit is. Plenty of people including truck drivers are already driving 15-25 above speed limit on I-95

All the more reason to allow those higher limits to go into effect. Thanks for proving my point!

If thats the case why not do everyone a favor in the name of safety and abolish speed limits altogether as evidently according to Jeff the faster you go the safer you are....

This is why I hesitate to move to Central Florida. I get run off the road doing 70. Now what will the speeders be doing, 100??

I'm not sure it's possible to get around up there using backroads.

The autobahn is pretty safe. Germans don't just let anyone get a license. You have to be 18 and go through a lot more than here. They also have much stricter laws in general when it comes to passing and such

Just trying to insert a little humor into the thread, not serious really.

The higher the speed, the greater the chance that a crash will result in serious or fatal injuries. That said, highway speeds are highway speeds for all intents and purposes. There's not going to be a measurable difference in crashing at 75mph versus 70mph. Both of them are equally as likely to result in fatal injuries depending on the dynamics involved. The human body can only withstand so much force.

The issue isn't necessarily the speeds, but the amount of traffic on the roadway and the big differences in vehicle speed that effects driver perception and response time. If everyone on the road was traveling at a constant speed of 100 mph there wouldn't be that many crashes, because nobody would be overtaking slower vehicles, cutting in front of other traffic, weaving in and out of traffic, etc. When you have traffic on the same roads moving at substantially different speeds, that creates a problem. When someone is traveling at 80mph and approaches a car that is traveling 50mph, that person going 80 has to make a quick decision on what to do. If they make the wrong decision, they could cause a crash. And as I said previously, when the speeds are higher the chance of a serious crash is greater.

So basically, if the speed limit is raised the minimum speed needs to be raised as well.
