Those decrying 'special interests' ignore the fact that those pushing solar and windmills are also 'special interests'. The groups often get funding for their plans through government subsidies (your tax dollars) or indirectly from groups who benefit (see prior groups).

Wen you see the rosy stories saying how great (insert 'green' energy program here) is, notice that the stories never discuss costs, including manufacturing (bankrupt solar cell companies, etc), environmental costs, irregularity of service (night for solar, windmills cannot work if the wind doesn't blow or blows above a certain speed), cost of maintenance, battery storage costs (yes, there are batteries involved), life of the equipment, etc, etc. The stories are always rosy, focusing on how you can save, and don't hurt the environment.

Here is a prime example. The massive solar plant constructed in the California desert is under fire from the same environmentalists that advocated solar. Why? Because after construction, it puts off so much light that it dazzles pilots flying the major airline paths into LA, as well as drivers on I-5. It generates so much heat that an unfortunate bird flying into the area immediately combusts (the workers call them 'streamers' referring to the bird turning into a stream of fire as they are burnt to a crisp). It is estimated that one bird is cooked every 2 minutes.

Then there are the thousands of birds killed yearly by the massive windmills in the wind farms.

Look beyond the hype and do research before jumping on the bandwagon.
