Then you will want to rule out St Pete/Tampa area because it's basically one big metro area that covers 2-3 counties. There are 4 million people in metro St Pete/Clearwater/Tampa. Compared to 1.9 million in Columbus. There are 1.3 million in metro Jacksonville.

You might add Tallahassee into your search because it's a smaller metro area. It's the FL state capital so there are extra jobs related to that. It is home to a major university - FSU - FL State University. They just played in the Rose Bowl a few days ago.

The problem with smaller metro areas is that there are fewer jobs. But this all depends on what your line of work is. If you are a teacher or work in the medical field, you could move to smaller areas. Same for some other professions. What is your line of work/career field?

Lakeland might fit your criteria but I don't know of a 4 year school there. Likely there are some but I don't know off hand which ones. Lakeland has some jobs for large corporations. Publix supermarkets is huge and Lakeland is their HQ. It gets rural/agriculture near Lakeland because some surrounding areas are related to Citrus and Strawberry crops. Google 'strawberry Plant City' for more info. Plant City is near lakeland. I don't know if you could survive in that town without a car. It gets hot in FL in the summer. I dont know if they have public transportation. During summer T storm season you dont want to be waiting for a bus outside. This applies to the entire state. Rainy season is June-Sept. Serious lightning storms in the afternoon during rainy season. Well, you know this if you lived in FL before.

Florida does not have any real public transportation. I live in Rotonda and in Charlotte County they do not even have bus service I am sad to say. Better jobs and opportunities plus some public transportation on the east coast of Florida.

I highly recommend NOT moving to SWF, with the exception of Naples. I'm from this area and from my taking, Cape Coral is a bedroom community that was so poorly planned it cannot and never will be able to accommodate the needs of the residents. Fort Myers has more options as far as shopping and dining but besides that, nothing. The Majority of SWF is retirement communities, Run-Down dangerous neighborhoods and middle aged people who made their money elsewhere and complained about the cold weather so they moved to Florida to live in a gated community.

^Yep, Cape Coral is a well known planning disaster within the planning community. Right up there with Golden Gate.
