Does anyone know which of the keys has the cheapest real estate prices? Id like to get a vacation home down there eventually to get away from Jax here and there. It looks like in some places a half million will get you a canal front with decent square footage.

Thanks!

I can't speak much for the upper keys but where I vacation in big pine key you will get a 1000 sq ft or so canal front home on a 6000 sq ft lot for around $300k. Marathon has some waterfront mobile home lots fairly cheap too but that is not a house. most ocean side canals in marathon have fairly deep control depth to accommodate bigger boats and also short length to open water.
if you got a half million you can have your pick of quite a few different canal front homes on many different keys. Unincorporated areas seem to be cheaper the the cities . Sunset key and key west are the most expensive keys to buy a home. it appears that after leaving marathon the closer you get to key west the real estate becomes more expensive. If you are looking for a SFH with direct open water access at the end of the canal or a oceanside you may be SOL with only a half million.

I would think it would be Big Pine. It's largest key with the least amount of development. It still has a lot of available land, although much of it is the Key deer sanctuary.

Why do you want to waste money on buying a place in the Florida keys when it would be mush easier to just rent a place? Look, if you don't want your money, please give it to me and I'll put it to good use.

Your plan is good in theory, but in practice it will not be the simple deal you envision, especially if you need to secure a loan to purchase the property. It is rather apparent that you are not familiar with the Florida Keys vacation rental game, but if you have piles of cash you don't mind wasting, then by all means proceed, but please don't proceed under the false impression that this is some great easy money making scheme that will pay for itself, although there are plenty of morons that will falsely tell you it is.
