It might be Lee County. Rentals are hard to find in Sarasota County Ugh

Sarasota gets many more snowbirds who pay a premium for 6 month rentals versus what it might cost spread out over 12 months, so property owners tend to go that direction versus long-term rentals. You'll find Cape Coral-Fort Myers-North Fort Myers will have more options and is a good bit more family-oriented as well.

I'd go with Sarasota county because it is quite a bit more upscale imo. The places I've seen in Lee county have been fairly run down, but I'm sure there are some good areas I haven't seen.

I live in Sarasota-Manatee. I am not familiar with Lee County; I only know that for all the 8 years I have been reading/posting on city-data, the overwhelming majority of opinions on Lee are negative. I would definitely look around both before you make a decision. If you can swing it here, Sarasota is a fabulous place to live. You can also check Manatee just to the north of Sarasota (actually where I live)

What's the word on Charlotte county? I drove through Punta Gorda a few weeks ago and it looked nice but I couldn't tell much really.

Punta Gorda is absolutely beautiful but from my experience I find its too quiet for me...If you like anything water related like Fishing, sailing etc, then you would love it there..

That's often the case when driving through most anywhere, and rest assured there are many nice areas of Lee County once off the major thoroughfares.

We looked in Bonita Springs, which is Lee County and Venice which is Sarasota. We ended up in Venice. More bang for the buck and it seemed less crowded.

Venice is a very nice small city. I keep wondering if someday it will become massively discovered....
