What I have seen is conventional thinkers try to turn them into conventional type A frame boxes, and thats where the issue that you mention comes in.
Even with the so-called "tiny house" movement, it didn't take very long for conventional thinkers to find a way to re frame the image of a tiny house into something they could justify prices of up to a quarter million, which is of course laughable.

The typical American gets things done with a credit card, so is totally useless with tools. doing your own work is the great equalizer in my view but the problem as always is the army of people standing ready to regulate every breath you take..... in the so called land of the free.

In Florida, with all the contractor licensing regs and building regs, almost impossible to do things yourself. If you are in certain areas, you would have to build the container home on an elevated foundation and on a stem wall foundation. Lots of regs you have to take into consideration.

My interest is a possible vacation/retirement place near but not on the beach. I am actually not looking at true mobiles but at manufactured homes (as one possibility). One thing I am finding is that a substantial number of the mobile home communities now only allow grandfathered mobile homes and when one leaves a manufactured home replaces it. Some have completely converted, not allowing grandfathering past the leases (which expired long ago).

Well I think they are just trying to protect people since we do get hurricanes. If you do quick fix yourself it might not be up to standards that they have.
