This op-ed written by a local farmer and board member of the SFL Water Management District discusses prioritizing Water Management plans to re-route fresh water trapped in agricultural and private lands to the Everglades and into Florida Bay. Florida Bay is approaching a crisis, as salinity levels are rising, and fresh water is lacking - algae blooms are already forming, protected seagrass is dying off, and all of that spells a great deal of trouble for the Florida Keys ecosystem, as well as Florida Keys tourism. These types of conditions lead to huge losses of sea life, and unhealthy air conditions that can make humans sick as well as make the waters gross and unusable. Both of those things hurt the money and jobs that come into Florida from tourism, and they also hurt residents' ability to enjoy our beautiful natural resources in FL.

I personally am not an expert on how this is to be done, or what potential pitfalls are involved with each proposed process to reach this goal, but it would seem that this is an issue we can all get behind, and support a speedy solution to. Here is the letter with more details: Sending water south to Florida Bay is in everyone's interest | Opinion Columns | KeysNet
