Duval County is a large urban district but since the covers the entire county, there are quite a few suburban areas. I am not quite sure if you would have a choice on school you worked at. My friends parents retired from teaching Spanish in inner city Jacksonville, they enjoyed their careers.

Fredesch- Oh wow, you have me a but nervous with that statement, did not know the teaching environment was like that. However, I see in some areas like Marion Co. for one teachers are being hired readily again, so hopefully it isn't so bad when I come down next year. I am nearly done with school and education is the degree I will have, so at this point just have to jump in with fingers crossed! Haha

MGordon- Will definitely look into the Palm Coast a bit more, sounds very appealing to me. Yes, obviously jobs are going to be a huge factor for me in my ultimate decision but I do want to ceck out a bit more about the area

JWolfer- Sounds similar to the NYC education district here! Haha Hoenstly I was hoping for something much smaller and personal, but that is true, can always live in the areas surrounding it. Thanks again all for the insight, much appreciated

My wife worked for Fairfax County Public Schools (Virginia) as a 3rd grade teacher for 8 years. We moved to Ormond Beach this summer and she got a job as a teacher in Volusia county. Google the web for forums on Teaching in Florida. PM me if you want to know the horror Florida school systems are.
