Is it true that new licenses are no longer issued on the spot, they are now mailed to you? When lived in Florida 7 years ago they gave me one before I left the office. Took about half an hour. That was very cool (and convenient).

That's news to me, although I'd believe it. In all honesty I'd actually support it, there are far too many people getting licenses here that they shouldn't have because they aren't actually residents, and then getting a variety of benefits they aren't entitled to.

In FL, DLs are renewed every decade-and-a-half. And, for your convenience, you can do so via email. (No joke.)

How recent, and at which office? Was yours a Real ID card with the gold star on it? That's encouraging, btw. I heard that Real ID regulations required DLs be manufactured and mailed from a central facility rather than done on the spot.

Real ID driver's license started being issued in Florida 1/1/2010. My husband and I got ours just before Christmas. He got his by going to a driver's license office in Brevard County. I got mine by renewing on line. They are both the same. There is no gold star but the license has more than 1 picture of you on it and some other changes. You do have to jump through the hoops listed on the web site to prove you are who you say you are and that you actually live at the address on your license.
Used mine at the airport for the first time this month and for the first time since they started full body scans I was able to get on the plane in Indianapolis without one. LOL

If there's no star you don't have a Real ID license. Renewals don't have to get one, this time. Your next renewal will.

I got mine back in November of 2010... so pretty recent. I have no idea what a REAL ID is, nor do I know if I have a star on my Florida License.... I don;t feel like getting up to look. I brought the following to get my ID.

Current out of state D/L
Passport
Utility Bill
Social Security Card

I am assuming its a REAL ID since it came directly from the County Tax Assessors office.

So it was mailed, not delivered over the counter?
