I live probably 20 minutes walk to the beach and live on a non flood elevation and non evacuation zone. There are homes that are nearer than mine by about 8-10 mins. It is doable.

Thanks for all the tips, I HAVE been taking notes!
I would say that Fernandina is indeed worth a visit, Coney.
Good idea to rent for awhile.

The closer to the water you will be in a evacuation zone as mentioned by a few members. The best approach if you want to be within walking distance to the beach is to have a plan of attack in case of a hurricane. Some areas are more prompt to direct hit than others, but any area can be hit.

You usually only have to evacuate if you want to, it's rarely mandatory.

I would recommend looking along the NorthEast coast of FL. You'll get hurricane action, but you can stay in your home if your nerves can take it. Other parts of FL have to evacuate the beach areas much more frequently.

My parents live within a few blocks of the beach - concrete block home, storm shutters, the works. They tell me if the big one comes, they're just going to ride it out. They tell me "we're old, what do we care?!"

But then again, they're crazy.
