You can try going to the big name insurance companies but I have found them to be more expensive. You are better off finding an insurance broker that will send your information and property information to multiple companies and come up with the best price. They typically work with smaller insurance companies in the state or region rather than the big nationwide ones.

Allstate, etc only serves certain ZIP codes. Go find a good independent broker and have him shop the policy. If you are inland, you can call around to Nationwide, etc and see what their rates would be if they serve the area.

We went to several places for quotes and the best price by far was with state insurance. The agent was great to, policy is good (for us anyways). It was about $400 cheaper then others.

We have Florida Penensula. We haven't had a claim. Your biggest worries are how well funded are company and will they be able to pay everyone in case of a hurricane.

With any FL insurance company, be sure to check their credit ratings, financial strength. You want a company that has sufficient funds to cover claims if a major storm hits your area of Florida. When FL was hit by several hurricanes/storms in 2004 and 2005, 5 insurance companies went under.

Every single carrier, large ones included, are sheltered by Florida only corporations.

Every admitted carrier is covered by the full faith and credit of the State of Florida and the guarantee fund.

Even if your company goes under, your claim will be paid and all policies of the defunct company get bought out by another carrier or rolled into Citizens. When companies enter rehabilitation (get shut by the state) the state's agency steps in and pays / handles all claims.
