Yup. Bilingual is HUGE in Florida. One of the many reasons that I left Florida was because I wanted a state job, and with my customer service background, I really needed to speak Spanish. They just wouldn't hire you. Still, wish I would have learned. Hispanics were great about trying to teach me. But I really needed formal training, I think.

There is a growing demand for Tech and Engineers in the medical fields, especially Pharmaceuticals. They are also needed in the Utilities industries like waste water, nuclear, gas turbine power plants and so on.

Medical (all fields) are always good! I should have thought of that too!!! We need more GOOD cancer specialists! I sure miss the one I had, and I can not seem to find another one here in FL!!

Default MyHomeIsInOcala-RE: Cancer Dr.

Have you tried the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa? I don't know what type of cancer specialist you are looking for, but I can highly recommend a cutaneous cancer physician at that center.

I would suggest sitting down with yourself to find out what do you like? What do you think you like? What gets you going inside? What floats your boat?

And whatever that is, learn as much as you can about it, practice practice practice and become the best you can be at it.

The Sylvester Cancer Center, University of Miami School of Medicine (although now it's called Leonard Miller School of Medicine because this family donated $100 million last year).
Is Miami toooooooo far from you??????

I was going to say something like that also. I think my son was in 2nd or 3rd grade when he decided he was going to be a engineer. Never wanted to be a police officer or a fireman. Fortunately, he is very smart (just like mommy ). He became an engineer from one of the top schools in the country for his field. He went to work in Michigan right out of school. They sent him to California and Germany. He got himself sent back to the states after a few months. Changed companies. Then left engineering altogether and is now in Florida selling yachts to Europeans and Japanese!

Imagine wanting to be an engineer in second grade. Gosh, how did he even know what that was? That is just great!

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it, Sunrico!

Weird right? Well, I guess it was my decision in a way. He just liked those Lego things so much and he would build and experiment and re-design and he always liked puzzles and taking things apart and figuring out every little gadget and he's a math genius so.....I thought it would be engineering and.... so it was! Actually, his college admission essays were centered around his love of Legos when he was little. He got into every university he applied to, even those which had 15,000 applications for 1500 slots.
Yeah, I'm a proud mommy

One more thing (geez I can't think straight this early so I can say it all in one post!). You can't tell my son is 50% Cuban. He's polite, quiet, reserved, thinks before opening his mouth and putting his foot in it...... WHERE DID I GO WRONG??????????

The Technology field is definitely alive and strong in Florida. Obviously it depends on what you like to do. I work with networks and I've seen plenty of jobs in Central Florida, especially Tampa. What seems to have the biggest demand, technology-wise, these days is programming. If you have good reasoning, and can learn how to code well, you can make very good money. Yes even in Florida. Networking makes decent money too but there seems to be 3 or 4 programming positions for every network/pc position out there. Although if you know Linux, you can go far...

If you decide to go the software route, learn C##, Java, maybe Perl and the other hot languages of the year. Also, if you can grasp databases and SQL, you can be a very hot commodity.
