My husband and I are planning to retire and move from CT to somewhere with warmer winters in about 5 years. I'm looking for a small city, near the ocean (or gulf), but big enough to have museums, shows, concerts. (or within 1/2 hour from one) I'd like to be able to walk to stores, and we'll be in our late sixties then, so would like a place that's safe to live.

Any suggestions?

Default Live in Paradise

Check out Destin, Florida along the Emerald Coast. My husband and I have lived here for over 2 years now. We are both originally from the Northeast, he is from South Jersey and I'm from NY. My parents currently live in CT. I have lived in the south since 1992 when I moved to Atlanta, GA. I love the south and would NEVER move back north. Way too cold!! Winters here are so short and we do have 4 seasons. Very little crime, gorgeous white sandy beaches with emerald green water, world class shopping and lots of golf. Panama City and Pensacola are within a reasonable drive for other "cultural" things. After visiting the area you won't want to leave!! It is truly paradise!!!

The cities of Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, and Destin can be the best choices. Do to the short distance between each other you can find everything that you need.

Destin is more of a tourist town, while Pensacola and FWB are more of the working cities. All are great places and are worth your time. If you get time take a short vacation and see for yourself. Good luck...

I recently took a drive out to the panhandle area for the first time known as the (not so) 'forgotten coast' and was blown away by the beauty. White sand, emerald green water, and friendly people. Very laid back. I loved Mexico Beach and everything in between. I'd move there in a second if I didn't have to worry about an income. Living in FWB or Destin would be an easy (and scenic) drive to everything you need. Beautiful area.

It is breathtakingly beautiful here indeed where I live on the Forgotten Coast, and we do have the occasional concerts and live theater peformances.
But the closest movie theater is 30 minutes away in Apalachicola, or 40 minutes away in Panama City. They have broken ground on a hospital but outside of that, healthcare is minimal.
Little in the way of grocery stores, let alone museums.
Ft Walton Beach/Destin/Navarre/Pensacola are a bit more civilized.
