I plan on moving down to Florida for grad school, and will eventually want to settle down there with a family. Obviously areas like Orlando are transient and aren't known for "everyday life" as they are for touristy things.

Any non-transient areas near Tampa/Orlando/Miami that is good for families?

Not too serious of a question, just out of curiosity for the future

All of those cities are good for families. You will find loads of transplants there, but that doesn't make them any less of a good place to live. And yes, normal life happens in Orlando.

Only a very small part of the outskirts of Orlando is touristy, and very few people live there.
Orlando is a city just like any other. People live here, raise their families, work, go out, etc.

There is not a place in the Florida peninsula that is not heavily transient. Perhaps in the panhandle there are. There were several million New Yorkers before you who had similar desires.

For starters I wouldn't cluster all the cities together like they're the same. Each has a different feel and while Orlando is the considerably more touristy of the three mentioned, does have suburbs and sections of the city where it doesn't feel touristy at all. I would recommend a visit and look at it as a place to live versus vacation spot to see which feels more "like home".

All of Orlando is extremely transient. When I lived there I was shocked at how fast people arrived and were gone in a matter of weeks. Same thing applies to suburbs etc.

Most of Florida is transient. It was not like this when I was a young person. By 1990 the state became this way. No one likes a transient area so you have to accept this or move to Nebraska.

Florida has been a transient state since the 1920s. And speak for yourself. I love Florida.
