I know there is a push for solar panels in Florida. Now the push has started since the last major storm to hit our area so no imperical evidence as to how the panels will survive hurricane winds. Well. Harvey has shown that they turn into shrapnel. They didn't hold up to a direct hit or close to the core.

Just keep that in consideration, look at how they affect your insurance costs, additional coverage, etc.

Remove them before a bad storm norm.

Many doors, windows and roofs didn't either or for that matter elements of traditional power sources such as electrical lines. It would be kind of dumb to expect anything different for solar and cannot imagine additional coverage requirements since building materials are already factored in and as vulnerable.

So people should not consider solar power as a hurricane might come along and blow the solar panels away?

Only if the ins. co. already knows you have them. If they were add-on, you may not be covered.

We've had discussions over on the Green Living Forum about the down-side of solar installations. Most people revel in the ROI & tax deductions (leaching on society) when not having to make monthly elect. payments but forget completely about the lost investment potential of having to tie up 5-figure capital to do the installation....and don't forget you have to do it all over again in 20 yrs. (iterate that cycle over 40 yrs and you're $100K behind.)

Use solar when you're far removed from the grid or to provide energy security. Otherwise, you won't save money and it does nothing for the environment despite the lies to the contrary.

Disclaimer: I do use solar for the sake of energy security for my deep well pump & boiler circulating pump here in my rural location. It's just that I'm realistic about the science and economics of it.

I wouldn't even look at a house to purchase if it had solar panels. Don't need the extra headaches. I wouldn't take them for free.

The OP has it "in" for Solar since this is his second thread on the subject.

Don't buy Solar energy and be a slave to the Energy companies then.
