I am leaving vacation early from Miami due to Irma and on 95 north there alot of traffic but south has almost no cars at all why are there no storm chasers going south

you have to wonder why the Governor won't order the southbound lanes to be opened up for northbound traffic....all I heard was that they need those lanes for gas tankers.....but I always thought mass evac would use all lanes northbound......

There are already many storm chasers in the Keys and Miami area.

It's not a big enough storm for them to end all possible movement South. It would have to be an Armageddon level storm in order to justify such a move.

Agreed. Would need to be a monster 5 going straight up the Peninsula

Gov. Rick Scott:

Despite lengthy delays reported by motorists, state officials announced they had no plans to reverse traffic on southbound lanes of the interstates or the Turnpike, a process known as “contraflow” used in other states that might help usher crowds north.

They said they need those lanes open to direct fuel, supplies and emergency response to the south.

Why can't they block off two lanes of the southbound side for northbound traffic? Can't the little southbound traffic fit in one lane? Separate the two with orange cones. It doesn't take that long.

Won't work on interstates.

They are allowing people to drive on the shoulder on 75 to Georgia though

But I've seen that sort of thing done on I-75 in eastern Utah. One side (the eastbound direction) is under construction. On the other side, there are cones separating the two lanes that are normally two lanes westbound. Both westbound and eastbound traffic drive in one lane each, separated by cones on those two lanes. The same setup can be done with an evacuation on an interstate; instead of one side being closed for construction, it's regular traffic using all the lanes leading away from the storm.
