Smaller towns on the Gulf Coast that you might like are Venice, Gulfport, Dunedin, Anna Maria Island (or Cortez in west Bradenton). I live in Sarasota, which I think you would love, but it has gotten very expensive here, especially in the areas you would want to live. Still, it might be worth a look while you are checking out the Gulf coast.

Nothing compares to the Keys!! I walk for exercise and my husband and I walk & bike for pleasure. We ride everywhere when we are in the keys, so until we can get there I am looking for something with that accessibility. We live in a small town now and want that same feel when we move to FL. I checked out Ormond and it looks wonderful. Venice looks interesting as well - we aren't quite ready for retirement but we do enjoy a slower pace. Thank you gypsychic for the other recommendations, I plan on checking those out tonight. Thank you so much to everyone for your input, it is greatly appreciated. With your suggestions I go to YOUTUBE and check out the towns different "channels" it is a great way to check them all out!!!

@ jenjmurray ........... Post Charlotte/Englewood is a nice area and I know of one newer home (2,350 s.f.) that may be available for a lease/purchase. It is ~ $3,000/month plus taxes and utilities. PM if interested. Except for being in the keys the area offers what you are looking for.

If your heart is set on the Keys/Key West - wait a year and try your search again. Housing market is becoming poor in Florida and the Keys were hit by Hurricane Irma, and I'm sure many people will look to their sell their homes - badly damaged or not.
