That's so sad.

We called them lightning bugs, too.

We've hijacked a thread! Oh, no!

I've noticed that a lot of things mentioned (birds, reptiles, and animals) can be found in many other places. The OP didn't say that they had to only be found in Florida or the deep South, but I thought that was the point.

I didn't have cougars or bobcats roaming the streets until I moved to Florida. It's a little creepy walking after dark with alligators and other wildlife around that could attack and eat me.

Yeah, moving to FL at the rate of about 800 a day. Or so it has been reported. Something about being tired of snow and cold weather.

In summer you may see fireflies in mangrove estuaries. At least that’s where I see them.

There’s a natural area off of A1A in Ocean Ridge that has them. They turn the walkway into a beautiful path lined with tiny lights!

I saw them last summer in Illinois but there are less of them even up there. If I remember correctly from when I lived up there in the 1970s, the lightning bugs were almost wiped out because of a study. I think people were paid to catch them and send them in for cancer research .

It's scary when you have dogs too. I have 2 small dogs and if I let them out at night I am always near them and have a flashlight and I carry a small knife in my pocket.
