We’re looking to move to Florida from Texas. We want to be on the white sand beaches. What city is the best as far as low crime, nice beaches and reasonably priced housing. My husband will br doing courier work, so need a city that he could be a driver in. Also, hear a lot of bad stories about sinkholes. Are they really something that would deter you from moving to a specific city. We are taking a trip in September to start looking for a house, just not sure where to look or what cities to avoid.

Sink holes are really a small problem and they do exist in virtually every State. To avoid such areas check here.

Sinkholes aren't real "issues" and while they're one of those things the media loves to grab hold of not as widespread in occurrence as you would be lead to believe. It's kind of like saying all of Oklahoma or Kansas experiences tornadoes or hail storms on a frequent basis. In other words it's a long odds situation, especially with some homework. If you want proximity to the nicer white sand beaches, that places you on the Gulf coast. For some kind of central location for job opportunities, proximity to beaches, reasonably priced housing and fairly safe neighborhoods I would recommend Clearwater which is more/less central to the Tampa-St Pete metro area. You can also find a number well-priced homes in the 200K-250K range. https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sal...t/13_zm/0_mmm/

If you want to be on white sand beaches, then your best option is Destin. Most beautiful beaches in the state, IMHO. Other people will say "we have white sand beaches too," but the beaches between Seaside and Destin/Santa Rosa Island have the whitest sand in the state.

You need to define "low crime" and "reasonably priced housing." Courier work doesn't pay much does it? Living on the beach is very HIGH $$$$$$ here. What is the budget???

And unlike the powder white sand the shell laden sand on Atlantic beaches intensifies heat, making it a real treat to walk on barefoot.

But more exciting to walk on and discover things on the beach like sea turtles nesting, surf , boogey board, paddleboard etc. As a local I wear flops in the heat of summer sun from the access to the wet. packed sand near the water so never spend a lot of time on the loose hotter sand unless we go early morn or later in the evening. I usually carry a beach bag for flops, water, and sea shells when we take our walks. We try to take walks just before low tide so there are more shells to see and hopefully find some shark teeth, sand dollars, star fish etc.

White soft sand is beautiful though if you want to just look at the water or basically float on a raft in water where the waves are sort of less than you get in Lake Michigan unless there is a storm. If you have small kids the Gulf is easier to let them just sit in the water and play since it is so shallow close to shore and doesn't get as much wave action that knocks your kids down.

I wouldn't agree "more exciting" other than waves crashing. The water is clearer and much more blue in the Gulf versus largely what is a foamy gray of the Atlantic side. In terms of shelling the Gulf is much better as well since what you find isn't usually beaten up/broken from the pounding waves. Check out Sanibel and Captiva for instance which are world famous for shelling. Also the Gulf side sees plenty of sea turtle nesting in/around the Tampa Bay area, Sarasota, the Panhandle and down around Naples.

I wonder what the post Harvey gulf water is really like. The flooding of a dozen superfund sites and hundreds of petrochemical holding ponds around Houston will have dumped tons of pollution into the gulf.
