When the Gov. of a state outlaws the use of certain words in his departments....like climate change and global warming (he did), you are unlikely to ever get proper policy or truthful statements.

It amazes me that people put trust in the state and state-financed orgs that claim to be "researching and monitoring" this. There is so much money involved (being lost) that they simply aren't going to tell the truth. Now that tourist season is approaching the State sites are starting to say "it's getting better and you may have a good experience", when the maps show otherwise....show it at levels 100X normal. 100 times....that's a lot!

Now - it's never been on the East Coast...AND, look where it is happening. Started right around where the Lake O dumps into the Atlantic! Yet we are told "the fresh water stuff has nothing to do with the salt water stuff".....just coincidence, eh?

Also coincidence that it started on the West Coast EXACTLY where the River dumps out there.

It is truly sad. You'd think eventually the "*** would be up" and the people of Florida would call out their elected representatives for their crimes. Yes, crimes. What we see is only the tip of the iceberg. Paper mills spew dioxin into watersheds on both coasts. No inspection for auto emissions. No plans for cleaner energy or cleaner trains, etc.

Nothing....well, I shouldn't say nothing because they spend PLENTY of energy doing the opposite of what is right and needed.

Makes me sick. Sorry.

Bill Nelson had absolutely no plan or anything for red tide and algae. Watch the debate they just had. It was around the 24 minute mark. When he was asked what would you do to fix the problem he spent 100% of the time attacking Scott. When Scott was asked he said he got funding from DC to repair the **** at Lake O and it will be finished in 2022.

Scott trashed Florida's pollution regulatory programs, and even banned discussion by state employees of the consequences of man-made climate change, as documented repeatedly in the Florida forum. Will the tiger change his stripes if elected to the U.S. Senate?

If elected, Scott definitely would support continued Republican control of the Senate, allowing the Republican man-made climate change deniers in control of the Senate and the White House to continue to promote pro-fossil fuel policies that will continue to warm the oceans making toxic algal growth more rapid and prevalent.

These Trump/Republican anti-environment policies also will result in accelerating global ice melt, thermal expansion of the oceans, and the continuing slowdown of the Gulf Stream, all contributing to an acceleration of the ongoing inundation of Florida. Hurricanes, fueled by warmer oceans, will become more powerful and move slower, as the jet stream slows due to the decreasing temperature differentials between a rapidly warming Arctic region and the tropics.

See posts 285, 287 and 290 in this thread for the implications for Florida's environment of supporting Scott over Nelson in the Senate race.

//www.city-data.com/forum/saras...de-bad-29.html

Floridians seem concerned today about red tide and other toxic algal blooms, but, despite significantly increased ocean flooding already impacting Miami Beach, Miami and other southern Florida communities, Florida's voters seem almost incomprehensibly indifferent to the accelerating levels of sea rise. A vote for Scott and other Congressional Republicans will delay once again the inevitable acceptance that an urgent crisis is at hand and aggressive action is necessary to avoid catastrophe.

As noted repeatedly in the Florida forum, Floridians also seem ignorant about the slowing of the Gulf Stream and how some scientists even predict its shutdown in coming decades. As the Gulf Stream pulls immense amounts of heat away from Florida's oceans, an even slower or absent Gulf Stream likely will result in a much warmer and more humid Florida.

Additionally, most Floridians and most Americans have no knowledge of ocean acidification, considered the twin evil of fossil fuel pollution along with global warming of the world's oceans and atmosphere, and which already is destroying the ocean's marine food chain, and imperiling an important source of human protein.

WR, I keep hearing and reading that Nelson takes $ from big Ag and Scott does not. Can you confirm, or deny this and cite sources? How old will Nelson be if he wins and at the end of his 1st term? Isn't it 82 years old? He's been in politics for 45 years already, isn't that enough? Do we want or need a lifelong political class?

A "lifelong political class" isn't bad in itself.....but, yes, ideally we'd have some new blood with the right attitude.

But, c'mon - Rick Scott and his multi-billion dollar fines for FRAUD while CEO of a health care company? His record in Florida is very very clear.

Ideally we wouldn't be electing 74 yo POTUSes and 84 yo Senators. However, given the choices.......the Devil who doesn't even allow discussion of environmental issues.....is not preferable to the Devil who may allow a conversation to start.

As long as Bill Nelson caucuses with the Democrats and blocks the Republican man-made climate change deniers in the Senate, he'll do infinitely greater service to Florida than Rick Scott, who will be another man-made climate change denier in the Senate.

If Carlos Curbelo was Florida's Republican Senate candidate, it would be a very different political equation as an outspoken Republican advocate for halting man-made climate change perhaps would help mute the partisan divide on climate change that so afflicts the American nation.

The point has been made repeatedly that Florida voters, out of self-interest, should vote to halt the warming of the oceans (and therefore better conditions for toxic algal blooms), sea level rise, and ocean acidification. A vote for Bill Nelson would be such a vote. A vote for Rick Scott would hasten the environmental degradation and ongoing inundation of Florida.

If Bill Nelson dies, or retires in office, and FL also elects a Democratic governor this fall, then a top-notch, environmentally friendly person could be appointed to fill out Nelson's term until a replacement election. Death or retirement likely would not be in Scott's future, so Florida would be stuck with Scott for six more years. Keeping Scott out of the Senate should be an utmost priority for Florida's environmentally conscious voters.

http://www.ncsl.org/research/electio...es-senate.aspx

If Florida votes this November for its environmental future, it could send a tsunami through American politics and hasten policy changes to mitigate the ongoing degradation of the quality of life in Florida.

Can liberals stop answering wuestion by trashing the other person?

How will Nelson fix the issue? He has had 40 years or so to do it or think of an idea. In the debate he offered zero solution, no fixes, no ideas, nothing.
