In January there was a special meeting to solve the problem of home owners insurance. Today while I was watching the news at 5 p.m. I heard several insurance companies now are asking for rate increases up to 45 per cent?

Anyone else here this, so this session in January does not solve much of our problem. First it is real hard to get insurance, now the rates are going even higher.

Why is it so hard to get insurance? We were the area hit by Hurricane Charley, we had a big claim and we have been renewed again and again. This renewal which is in the next 30 days is the same as last year which is about double what it started at in 2003.

No big deal.

I have insurance through St. Johns.
My original amount was 1898 but then I was notified that it was going down to 1298...plus they let me pay it in 4 equal payments over the cource of the year.

Of course I won't know until December what my amount will be for the coming year of 2008.

I am getting St. John's (dumped from AllState), my policy will be about $200 more than Allstate last year. In August 2006 it doubled from 2005. I was also happy to hear that you can make 4 payments, did like Allstate because you could pay monthly. Before it wasn't that bad to pay yearly, but now it's getting pretty expensive.

Today, I received a letter from Nationwide, letting me know my homeowners insurance will be going up next month. Since there was NO explanation of how much of an increase, I called them. They said the letter was a "courtesy" and the new rates would be posted next month. Is it me or do you all think this is BS. What courtesy when no mention of dollar amount, so for the next month I have to worry about whether I can afford my insurance? This is a farce.

Bette, I am in Ocala. I cant believe I am complaining. My insurance last year was 676.13. I would fall apart if I got a 4500 premium.

I'm with Olympus and our yearly insurance is $767. Here's a helpful website that Gypsychic posted a while back.

This is the link for insurance rates. Compare Homeowner's Insurance Rates

Good luck everybody. I guess rates are going up because of the recently release hurricane forecast.

At least you got a letter, after 25 years with them our rental house was canceled in jan without notice. We found out last month due to the bank writing us that they would be buying insurance on the home, so got coverage it was $328 year, now it is $1385 yr same coverage. NWide is canceling our primary home in may, in 2003 premium was 600 yr, now 3875 with Universal only company that will write for us. This market is nuts, we can get cheaper insurance if we go buy a new home for 3 times our current payoff, then I could not afford the taxes, the payment, or the insurance. Another grand or two a year and we will be forced to leave the state.
