really feeling the congestion here in FL, when I moved here a decade ago, the area where I lived wasn't too bad, but with the housing correction and economy improvement from about 2014-15, things have gotten pretty crowded (housing and commercial development).

There are still a lot of more rural parts of FL worthwhile, somewhat center of the state/northern FL.

Maggie Valley and Linville are very retiree-oriented and kind of boring if somewhat active, plus kind of far from "civilization" in my opinion. Waynesville is more a stand-alone city with enough to do to prevent boredom and offers enough services unlike the other two.

It's happening in many places here in FL and quite frankly don't get the attraction to out of control unplanned development that seems to have no limitations when it comes to green space. I live in Seminole County whose slogan is "The Natural Choice" in reference to it's tree cover and water features. However in the northern part of the county especially they can't tear down trees fast enough and eliminate wildlife habitat. It's truly sickening to watch...

The attraction is profits for developers, and kickbacks for local politicians...period! Residents/citizens have NO chance against this alliance. It takes enormous effort, and amount of time spent to score the most miniscule victory against them....I've been there, done that.

Very few people want to live in overdeveloped areas devoid of green spaces and trees, but what people want is not driving the market because there's too much demand. Its s "push" market (build it and they will come and buy it) rather than "pull" market where builders are trying to lure buyers with providing what they want and tailoring to their needs.

This is why some of the master planned communities have had, and will continue to have success. They set aside green space, and some people are willing to pay more for that.

Yet people are moving here left/right giving up what is often a better lifestyle overall in favor of mild winters, lower salaries/inequitable rental housing, the perceive value of no state income tax and pretty close to zero environmental protection. Should be lovely in another 10-15 years...

It's obvious to me that people move in because they perceive it to be better than were they are.

Moved from San Francisco to Orlando in 2016... was considering some other cities, but Orlando has such nice housing communities at great prices and much of the city has nice landscaping, was clean, little homeless, ample parking and all the theme parks, we went with Orlando and are very happy. San Diego was the next closest choice, but the housing was just too old and ugly in comparison.

hmm "moving here giving up a better lifestyle" Do you mean working 40+hrs/wk, fighting rush hour traffic, paying high taxes, and shoveling snow? Most people couldn't wait to leave all that behind when they moved here. That is why Florida's growing so fast, while people flee the North like rats off a sink'n ship.

"lower salaries"? Heck yeah...most of us strive for NO salaries. We're retired, or semi-retired, so we've made all we need. What we don't need are salaries. The only thing better than lower salaries are NO salaries. This is largely a retirement state, but if you are not retired and choose to live here anyways, then who is to blame for that? You are free to leave at any time.

"inequitable rental housing"? Should all housing be equal? Isn't that socialism? I love seeing that colorful row of tiny homes behind Ruth Chris's in Sarasota as much as I love to ogle at the mansions on Casey Key. Stephen King has one of the biggest mansions out there, so he's obviously okay with inequitable housing. All the stars in Hollywood love inequity too...have you seen those mansions? Al Gore has a real doozy, and the Obama's are buying one too. If you can't afford the rent here, stop and take action. There are some really cheap rents in Detroit.

No state income tax? Heck yeah! Let the tourists pay all our taxes for us. Now that's a great perceived value in my book. Most of us who have moved here paid 80% of ALL the taxes when we were up North, while the underachieving lazy parasites lived off of us. We left those leeches behind to fend for themselves.

Zero environmental protection? US World & News Reports ranks Florida as one of the best States for the natural environment year in year out, so if its not broke...don't fix it. Our Rock Star Governor is the best on the environment Florida's had for many years says the Miami Herald & the Orlando Sun Sentinel. California always ranks as one of the worst States, so let's not bring their politicians here. How are the environmental protections in Seattle, San Francisco, and LA working out in those homeless encampments? No so good eh?

"should be lovely in another 10-15 years" Look around you...its lovely now! Florida has been beautiful as long as I've been alive, and it will be beautiful for many generations to come...until NY, NJ, CT, MA, IL, CA, MN, PA, MI, OH are all desolate wastelands because all their residents moved here, and ruined it...like they did to their home states. 10-15 years from now, those Northern States will look like a scene from a Mad Max movie...or Detroit...same thing. Have you seen the population history of Cleveland

What other states did you consider before moving to Florida? I have heard very few mention any of these States. If you can't be happy here, please seek help.

People move to other places because of a variety of reasons than what you state: to be near family, assist family, work assignments/career progression......sometimes you sacrifice to pay the bills or to get promoted.

Florida isn't free of 40+ hour work weeks or rush hour traffic. Paying taxes is the trade off (and then some) and "shoveling snow" happens what, maybe once a year? Florida is no longer considered a retirement state given the population boom is happening in cities like Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville which aren't typical retirement destinations. Unless you've spent the past few years with your head up another body opening one would know the situation facing working individuals in South Florida, Orlando and Tampa Bay where the cost of rent is disproportionate to average salaries (25% of net income). Hysterically you refer to some as leeches living up north while you pay taxes, but in typical hypocrite fashion find no issue with living tax-free here. Best in environmental practices? LOL Another head up the body opening moment. Red Tide, collapsing aquifer and lakes/ponds rendered unusable due to bacterial infestations don't lend to a title claiming best in environmental protections no matter what some magazine states. NY, NJ, CT, MA, IL, CA, MN, PA, MI and OH are not desolate wastelands and shows how disconnected you are from reality. You've probably never visited most of them and are simply parroting some misinformation picked up elsewhere. I would happily live in places like the Finger Lakes in NY, NW/W New Jersey, Western CT, Central/Western MA, Central IL, Sacramento/Wine Country CA, Twin Cities/Duluth/Rochester MN, Bucks County/NE PA, Pretty much anywhere in MI which is a gorgeous state or Columbus/Cincinnati OH. Lastly if you think anyone needs help, look in the mirror with so many falsehoods and living in some kind of fantasy world...you're much like our worthless "POTUS".
