If you are saving more $ where you are now than you would be after moving to FLA, I'd suggest staying there, and building up your savings. Don't even think of moving if it will decrease your savings for the future, or narrow your career opportunities.

At this stage in your careeer, you should be maxing out your 401k and/or IRA. If you are not, you must reduce your living costs, or increase your income.

Move's are costly, and my gut tells me you need to focus upon your finances & career more, and this move would not help either.

Many of my Gulfport neighbors are very UNbored 30 somethings! Most work in DTSP with a 15 minute commute, but my immediate neighbors work from home, married 30-something, no kids. They are major bike riders using the Pinellas Trail and keep a boat at the Gulfport Marina, which they can walk to (discount rates for City residents, btw). There are two dog parks within an 8 minute walk and they take breaks from their work to exercise their two fur faces. They also have a paddle-board they use at our little beach.

Free tennis courts in a 6 minute walk. Fishing Pier is 7 minutes walk.

Walk over to Clam Bayou and take a nature walk or launch your kayak and paddle with the dolphins.

There is almost nightly live music within a 10 minute walk....alternates between OMaddy's, Cadillac's, Tommie's, Tangelo's, Salty's, etc.

There are 2 live theatres, one avant garde.

12+ non-chain eateries within same 10 minute walk, all with open air patios, dog-friendly....always groups of 30-somethings at these places.

Twice a month HUGE volleyball tournaments (Tampa Bay Beach Bums). Twice a month nighttime Art Walks. Weekly Tuesday Market.

Almost every weekend there is a Special Event. Last weekend was an Open Artist Studio Tour...all walkable and free....saw some amazing artwork at (mostly) home art studios, met some amazing people.

Not every 30 year old is the same....I offered these activities to see if the OP would like this lifestyle.

Making 50,000 and living in pricey downtowns in Florida you will probably need a roommate to enjoy life. Just being honest. I suggest moving a little further out in Orlando near the commuter rail. To be honest I heard rent is ridiculous in Florida. But 50,000 with little debt and low rent can live well as a single guy.

This is also a good suggestion. You can find affordable rents in Altamonte and Longwood near the rail stations, as well as South in Kissimmee (area can get a bit rough though... Just be warned.)

If you must stay in the downtown area, there are some older units running around $1100-$1300 (some even cheaper -- they're just small, and typically are houses divided into apartments.)

I also suggest looking into having a roommate. Sharing a 2/2 with another person isn't as bad as it sounds, as long as they are clean enough.

Hey, lots of people enjoy this lifestyle ^^- I have a similar lifestyle in Lakeland. But OP is from Chicago, and I think looking for a little more action than quaint little Gulfport.

Thanks for posting my video!

I agree with the others that is too low of a salary for Florida.

haha I saw that video many years ago. Congrats on that it's hilarious. But 50k is too low? I disagree...not for a single guy. Especially if he's living in Toronto currently (just assuming) and considering Chicago (as he wrote in the OP). Those are both considerably more expensive than Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville and pretty on par with Miami.

Just caught this little piece of info here that I guess I missed before...

Downtown Orlando, Downtown Tampa, and Downtown St-Pete all have roughly the same population (~15,000.)
Not sure where you're seeing that there are double the people.

What would you recommend?
That perception is false in the college town of Tallahassee - it has a hyperfocus of the FSU experience for ages 19-22. A 30 year old person there would be like "Frank the Tank" - relatively old and a social misfit. The class of 2023 is in vogue over there - nowhere near retirement age "full of old people".

By contrast, the I-4 corridor is ideal for your age group - this is Central FL. Tampa would be more realistic - perhaps St. Petersburg. Or look into some parts of Metro Orlando like Mt. Dora or Doctor Phillips. Many of the recent college graduates from the in-state universities get their first full-time jobs along that I-4 corridor. You would fit in better with that age group there. Avoid the college town of Tallahassee. 30 is too old from their point of view.

For the disinclined, "Frank the Tank" was the middle-aged party guy in the 2003 film "Old School" playing drinking games with much younger college students. That reminds me of FSU - lol.
