The initial optics of this pleases the environmentalists, but when we dig deeper, there could be more to this than meets the eye that may not be so pleasing.

I read the seller of the land had no intention of drilling, or fracking on it, and that was just a ploy to get the State to buy it from them. It was worthless land in the middle of nowhere.

If the price was right, and no kickbacks occurred to anyone involved (like huge realtor fees, appraisals, legal fees, ect.) then fine. I think most of it was undevelopable swamplands, so worth almost nothing.

I think we'll hear more about this transaction when DeSantis runs again....for whatever office he may seek. My guess is that there's more to this than the media is reporting.

Kanters have been trying to get the state to buy that land for years....pulling the permit to drill was their way to force the state's hand...it worked

Agree. Refreshing vs dick Scott who wouldn't even allow the term to be spoken, or Trump who thinks GW is a Chinese conspiracy

That is what I read too. So long as the state didnt overpay for it, I'm jiggy with it.

They refused to give them permits to develop it....making it worthless....then refused to buy it
...basically a land grab the state didn't even have to pay for

Kanters figured out they still have the mineral rights...and the roads....so they had it surveyed and threatened the state with that

The state tried to pull a eminent domain by condemning their property....
...and not pay for it

Why did they buy the land w/o first determining if it was developable? Have the owned the land for 50+ years? That could explain it.

I know they've had that land for at least 3 generations...don't remember exactly....when they bought it there was no Everglades restoration and that mess....so yes, when they bought it they could develop it

State changed the designation on them...condemned it...and refused to pay

Government does this all the time....declare you're a protected wetland..and leave you hanging with the bill

Everglades....the park....tried a land grab in south Dade by trying to flood them out...flooded everything west of C111...the park wanted that land as more buffer.....ended up in court...and lost big time

edit: it's been at least 4 generations..

A great many of our natural springs are dead or dying. I hope the "rock star" can save them. I know the majority of people in these Florida forums are not native Floridians. But for those of us who are native Floridians, and grew up swimming in pristine springs and beaches, it is DEVASTATING to see what has happened to our springs and our beaches (with toxic algae, etc.).
