FL, like all states except Montana work under the "employment at will" doctrine.

Simply, anyone can be terminated from a job at anytime without recourse unless the person is under contract.

The employer may have good cause, bad cause or no cause at all.

"right to work" means you cannot be required to join a union in order to get a job.

It has nothing to do with job security, termination, raises, etc.

You are in a situation where you have to make a choice. Accept the lesser position with the lesser salary or go find another job.

It's worth while to note that "at will" is not the same among the states. Otherwise, agreed.

I was working at Pearson Nissan in Ocala. I went to work on my day off to try to sell more cars and instead, they fired me saying that: "I don't fit their Business Model". I sold 12 cars on that month...

Before that, I was working at a Chevy Dealership, Palm Chevrolet, that fired me on retaliation for taking a Christmas Vacation that they even paid! They said I didn't meet my "objective" in sales, even when I was on Vacation for 9 days, with my 9 year old son who came from Puerto Rico to visit Disney, etc. I requested that vacation 6 months ahead.

I was making way more money and with wayyyy more rights back in Puerto Rico, so I'm moving back pretty soon....

is it?

While "at will" is not directly related to "right to work" they do affect each other. In union states, the unions almost always will negotiate terms regarding an employers procedure and right to terminate. In many cases, unions will require a "just cause" for termination.

While most states may be "at will" states, unions fight for better protection against unjustified termination. This is why it's easier to be fired in Florida for something silly than it is to be fired in the New England states or other union states.

This is a bit older of course, but illustrates what I was getting at: http://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2001/01/art1full.pdf

I'll let you read it when you have time, but the gist is that there are three "major" exceptions to at-will employment, and those exceptions vary by state.

They are:
  • Public Policy Exception
  • Implied-Contract Exception
  • Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing
Some states do not have any of these exceptions, others recognize one or more of them. In any case, enjoy the read (it's a pretty short read).

"Right to work" laws are a government intrusion into the free market: an intrusion into the right to make business contracts and an intrusion into an employer's right to set conditions of employment. A right wing version of Big Government.
