Default Austria imposes national lockdown and a vaccination mandate

See post 210 in this thread.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/ohio...l#post62345086

Note that Florida's overall vaccination rate of 60.7 percent is a few percentage points lower than in Austria.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/coronavir...accine-tracker

Although Florida apparently is experiencing a lull in the Delta variant epidemic, partially due to natural immunity acquired by the unvaccinated due to the recent surge, both naturally acquired immunity and vaccinated immunity wane over time. So Florida may experience a rebound in cases, hospitalizations, deaths and long COVID cases, as society moves back indoors during winter and as the holiday season increases contacts.

Note the ramp up of a new COVID surge last winter after a lull from the summer 2020 surge.

Of course, Florida just experienced its most significant COVID case surge, creating at least temporarily very high levels of natural immunity. Additionally, this year Florida has protection offered by initial COVID vaccinations, and also from booster availability and recently approved vaccines for children aged 5-11.

The unanswered question is what percentage of Floridians will avail themselves of maximum vaccine protection, let alone wear masks and practice prudent social isolation measures, given the active encouragement of vaccine and mask skeptics by Florida's political leadership.

It wouldn't be surprising if the Florida winter COVID surge is less significant than last year, but it would be even more surprising if there wasn't a measurable COVID surge to some degree in Florida this winter.

<<Beyond the numbers, there are the heartbreaking stories of children struggling to breathe as desperate parents lament not getting them vaccinated even when eligible.

Dr. Kenneth Alexander, chief of infectious diseases at Nemours Children’s Health in Orlando, Florida, said the hospital has not treated many kids with the most serious form of COVID – acute viral pneumonia – but just a few instances leave a deep impression.

“When these kids come to our hospital, they’re not getting enough oxygen; they’re gasping, they’re miserable,’’ Alexander said. “At best, they’re going to be in a hospital bed for five days on oxygen. But it’s those kids that end up in our intensive care unit on ventilators and with breathing tubes. They get blood clots in their lungs. It’s very, very scary.’’>>

I haven't tried to figure out how a Disney Cruise Line vaccine mandate noted in the above article is affected by the Florida's anti-vaccine mandate laws, including recently passed laws.

<<Disney Cruise Line will require all guests ages 5 and older to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before setting sail starting Jan. 13, the company said.>>

https://www.newsweek.com/against-flo...vaxxed-1650933

Kids on Disney cruises will be protected in Florida, but not kids in Florida schools.

What percentage of Floridians would support a state-wide vaccination mandate if polled, especially if they were informed about the incidence and risk posed by long COVID syndrome?
