Does anyone have recommendations in Florida? Standalone towns would work best for me. Corvallis, Oregon, would be an example of what I'm talking about. Any info you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks! -- John

You do not need a car just about anywhere in Florida and most states. Uber and Lyft provide plenty.

I recommend Miami Beach. It has less than 100,000 people and is on it's own little island with plenty of public transportation up and down the region. I stayed there when I went on vacation and I got everywhere on the bus from Bal Halbour to South Beach. It also has a trolley. You never have to go to mainland Miami for anything. If MB is too big for you, it has calmer little towns up north like Sunny Isles Beach (population 22k) that also have public transportation.

I don't live on this site. I use it as a tool when I'm preparing to move somewhere... which is about 9 times in the last 12 years.

I like Corvallis a lot, but I'm getting older and I want warmer weather and thunderstorms. I also miss sandy beaches! I'm in NY while making this transition.

Thanks, but I'm looking for a town that's kind of on its own. MB and SIB are parts of a huge metro area.

Yes but I would say those are minor issues considering what you asked for. There's nothing like Corvallis in Florida. I would definitely suggest keeping your search to the PNW and looking into another city called Bend, OR. Population is less than 100k, it's beautiful, it's isolated, and has a reliable public transportation system. Good luck with your search.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/flor...tereotype.html

See this thread I started last month, post 2 or 3 : )

“My wife and I recently moved to Gainesville from Corvallis, OR and I’d say you nailed it! Not “Western” so much as “Left Coast”. Haven’t seen so much of the town yet, thanks to the virus, but many of the things you named are what drew us here for semi-retirement.”

Anyways.. if you are talking about under 100K at metro level that really wouldn’t work. But, Gainesville fits a lot of the criteria you mention and would probably be the most Corvallis-esque place in the state

Also look into Sarasota.
