Over 1 year ago, in May 2019, our state budgeted $600M to improve water quality, and the Feds pledged to match it, but thus far, have been unable to get it done.

20 years ago, the Feds said they'd match Florida funding in a water quality program called CERT. It never gets done, and Florida has the Green Algae to show for it, and poor outflow from Lake O, and a delapidated dam that cannot be trusted to hold excessive seasonal rainwater in, so the nitrogen rich water flows into the Gulf via Charlotte Harbor & the Atlantic Ocean via the Indian River Lagoon.

The President has proposed in his 2020 & 2021 budgets to fund CERT to the tune of $450M in total for the 2 years. The President can only propose a budget, Congress must pass it, both the House & Senate. Last year, the House failed to approve the funding, so the Senate never saw it.

The current leadership of Florida & the Executive Branch of the Federal Government have done their part again this year.

It's now once again up to Congress (particularly the House) to approve the $450M. I don't think Florida can begin work on this large scale environmental project until matching funds are made available from the Feds.

Let's hope the funding is not rejected by the House of Representatives, as it was last year.

Please write your congressperson to approve these funds so we can improve the water quality in our great state.

After Spending $3.5 Trillion for C-19 stimuls, this is chump change for the Feds, but crticial to Florida.

This article explains the shared funding well, and how Florida has done its part by Washington DC hasn't.

We need DC to keep its commitments to 50% funding so we can get the Lake O & Everglades water cleaning resevoires built.

This will go a long ways to clean up the waterways on both coasts where the overflow from Lake O mucks up the Indian River & Charlotte Harbor resulting in Blue-Green Algae, & fish kills.
