Levels of Red Tide continue to increase off the southwest Florida coast.

In Sarasota County, seven testing locations now show "LOW" levels of Karenia brevis (Red Tide) organisms. Another two testing locations show "VERY LOW" concentrations. As explained in post 69, rapidly cooling ocean temperatures may prevent more severe blooms this winter. Yet current levels of abundance, especially "LOW" and above, have negative impacts that are a cause for concern.

<<experts say it’s late in the season for a bloom, which usually occurs in late summer and early fall.>>

https://www.sarasotamagazine.com/new...arasota-county

One testing location in Lee County shows a "MEDIUM" level, one show "LOW," and 3 show "VERY LOW."

One testing location in Charlotte county shows "VERY LOW."

One testing location in Manatee County shows "VERY LOW."

Three testing locations in Pinellas County show "VERY LOW."

Possible effects of "VERY LOW" abundance:

<<possible respiratory irritation; shellfish
harvesting closures when cell abundance
equals or exceeds 5,000 cells/L>>

Possible effects of "LOW" abundance include likely respiratory irritation:

<<respiratory irritation; shellfish harvesting
closures; possible fish kills; probable detection
of chlorophyll by satellites at upper range of cell
abundance>>

With "MEDIUM" abundance, Red Tide becomes very problematic:

<<respiratory irritation; shellfish harvesting
closures; probable fish kills; detection of
surface chlorophyll by satellites>>

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission may have eliminated the detailed beach-by-beach Red Tide status report.

Instead, the FFWCC at its main Red Tide page has replaced these definitive reports with a map, in which individual beaches are not identifiable. The current map shows several beach in Lee and Collier counties with "medium" or "high," both classifications representing severe Red Tide impacts, including respiratory irritation, shellfish harvesting closures, and probable fish kills

Previous regional reports now are available at different webpage, but it's not clear if future beach-by-beach status reports will be issued. Here's the last report available for December 30. It shows four of the five beaches in Collier County with high readings, and the fifth beach with a medium reading. Lee County had 8 beaches ranked medium or high.

Once Florida ocean waters begin to warm again, it's possible that the Red Tide will spread north.

Despite the high Red Tide readings in Collier County, I could find no discussion about the Red Tide in the Naples newspaper. The Red Tide also is not being discussed in the Naples C-D forum. It is being discussed in the tripadvisor.com Naples forum (see posts 9 and 11).

Default Agencies update Red Tide wildlife impacts, fish kills in SWFL

The recent outbreak of Red Tide in Lee and Collier counties has impacted wildlife. A shellfish harvest also was suspended.

<<The persistent red tide bloom has caused the shellfish harvest area in Matlacha Pass North to close on Jan. 19. It’s not known when the harvest area will reopen.>>

https://abc-7.com/news/environment/2...cken-wildlife/

Here is the most recent SW Florida Red Tide report.
