Hello everyone!

So my fiancé and I are in the works of a relocation to Florida. I grew up in Illinois my entire life, and she grew up in southern Wisconsin her entire life. I was given a solid career opportunity (significantly better than my current situation) which is located in Mulberry.

We have been browsing around on Zillow, Redfin, and Realtor.com very briefly. We are leaning more towards the Lakeland and Winter Haven areas, but we are seeking additional opinions from the locals of Polk County. I am open to driving up to 45-50 minutes to work daily (as I do currently), as I said, the career opportunity is in Mulberry.

A bit of background about my significant other and myself. We are 28 and 29 years old, we have 2 dogs (golden retriever and a mix), and we don’t mind going out to restaurants or the occasional bar. We liked the idea of polk county because you are in between Orlando and Tampa for some very cool attractions, as well as an approximate hour drive to the ocean, for some cool weekend trips once in awhile.

The ideal house for us would be $250,000-$275,000, 3+ bedrooms, 2+ bathrooms, Relatively large kitchen, decent sized backyard with fence (dogs), quiet neighborhood, close drive to retail spots (15 min. is okay), a pool with an enclosure over it would be my dream although not required, and a house that doesn’t require much refinishing.

With all that being said, we are open to some opinions and guidance for our upcoming move in approximately 6-8 months.

If anyone knows of any amazing realtors, we don’t have one yet either, so we are looking for one of those too!

Thanks for reading, and we hope to get some great feedback!

Like you said, Polk County is in the middle of everything. And it's famous for being tough on crime--a real law and order place.

It's nice that most real estate listings can be visited online. I would suggest you go ahead and make a personal visit or two as prospective home owners. Orlando's airport is often very inexpensive to fly into.

Polk County and the counties south of there are warm year round. North of Orlando can see cold temperatures in winter.

Go for it.

Look on the south side of Lakeland around Lakeland Highlands which is a very desirable area with a good selection of homes in your price range with the features you want. It places you not far from Downtown Lakeland which has some nice restaurants and brewpubs as well as the south side's upscale retail area Lakeside Village (an open-air retail center with some good restaurants as well).

I agree with Kyle ^^^. South side of Lakeland/Lakeland Highlands you can't go wrong. Lots of nice things/places to do/eat between there and downtown Lakeland. We moved to central Lakeland last year and absolutely love it.

If you want an amazing realtor, I recommend Betsy Martin with Coldwell Banker. She has been in the biz for many, many years and is as sharp as they come. You won't be sorry.

Good luck to you and welcome!

Be aware of Florida style natural disasters. Lightning, floods and hurricanes. Don't get stuck with a house with really high flood insurance or a neighborhood with too much lightning for you to be comfortable.

Florida has the largest number of recorded strikes during summer.[citation needed] Much of Florida is a peninsula, bordered by the ocean on three sides with a subtropical climate. The result is the nearly daily development of clouds that produce thunderstorms. For example, "Lightning Alley"—an area from Tampa to Orlando—experiences an extremely high density of lightning strikes. As of 2007, there were as many as 50 strikes per square mile (about 20 per km2) per year.[10][11] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distri...g#Distribution.

Good luck on your move, you will enjoy the winters here. Not sure if you will like the muggy summers.
