Florida's minimum wage raises:

Currently: $8.56

Jan. 1, 2021: $8.65

Sept. 30, 2021: $10.00

Sept. 30, 2022: $11.00

Sept. 30, 2023: $12.00

Sept. 30, 2024: $13.00

Sept. 30, 2025: $14.00

Sept. 30, 2026: $15.00

Once the Florida minimum wage reaches $15/hr, it will increase annually based on cost of living.

Standard CoL adjustment is 2% per year. That's $0.30/hr for someone earning $15/hr. Guarantee that in 2026 minimum wage earners will still be crying about their wages, and demand more.

$0.30/hr is a very respectable guaranteed yearly wage increase for a minimum wage worker. Many people don't even get raises every year.

By 2026 this state is going to be in a world of hurt in terms of living conditions and hourly wage workers. It's not a sustainable situation and before too long the wheels are going to fall off. Why hang out in a state where the average wage is lower than many other states, while the cost of living is substantially less?

Everybody keeps saying the cost of living in Florida is soooo low, but that's patently false. Look up some of the data. The cost of living in Florida is well above average, and the minimum wage is starvation level here.

Good points Kyle. I would expect minimum wage to follow the movement of the typical starting wages for above-MW jobs. If "the market" and COL say that new accountants can go from $44,000 to $46,000 over a year, why would MW salaries have to stay the same?

I can't believe no one has started a thread about the Miami mayor's possibly successful Twitter campaign over the past couple of weeks to make Miami the next tech giant. Not even on the Miami forum the last time I checked. I'm not one to start new threads haha.

I wonder what impact that would have on living conditions. These San Francisco tech escapees could easily bid an extra $400/month for rent or $10,000 for a condo/house in a tight market since it's still "cheap" compared to SF, which would push current residents or recent FL university grads out of the market.

Minimum wage isn't supposed to last a lifetime. You're supposed to better yourself and climb the ladder professionally. These McJob workers are complaining now because they see their current job as a career and not what it is - a stepping stone. They want an increase now, and they don't care what it costs down the road.

As for the CoL, that's all relative. If you're coming from NYC, you'll be amazed at the low CoL, even in places like Miami and Tampa. If you're coming from East Wheatfield, Iowa, you'll be stickershocked. I'm in Central FL, a solid half hour from the bigger cities and I can get a very nice house, in a safe neighborhood, for $130K. Personally, I consider that low. My rent was $875, which I also considered low.

Are you in a very rural area and is it a mobile home? Because I call BS that you can get a "very nice" house in a safe neighborhood in an urban or suburban area in Central Florida for $130k. I live in DeBary (which I enjoy) and homes are relatively affordable here and there are currently no houses less than $200k listed on Zillow for DeBary.

I was curious about where DefNotTheCops lives as well, or by what metric constitutes a "very nice house, in a safe neighborhood."
