I'm ready to retire from the North. I've been researching over-55 condo communities and I'm seeing a lot of them in New Port Richey that are reasonably priced and have reasonable HOA fees. I also like that many of them are single-story.

However after reading some of the posts about New Port Richey being undesirable for any number of reasons, I am wondering - does this extend to the over-55 condo communities? I'm just looking for a safe, affordable and laid back community. I'm not looking for a lot of amenities: I likely would only use walking trails and a pool, although I would like to work in town part-time. I also would like a good local hospital and local healthcare; I'm not really good about doing a lot of freeway driving to get those services in nearly larger towns.

Any thoughts on the pros and cons of over-55 condo communities in that town? Any advice would be appreciated.

Some are ok i guess jess. Never lived in a 55+ place.

I would recommend you look further south in Bradenton. It's much less depressing in terms of the surroundings. Here's some examples:
