As bad as the numbers of reported Covid deaths are, Florida's excess deaths numbers tells us the reality of the situation is far more dire than is being reported.

Sadly, we're probably going to pass New York's death toll by October 1.
Florida has a much older populaton than New York, so Florida's older residents are much more vulnerable to Covid-19. I would be shocked if Florida did not pass New York ultimately.

Florida has a higher vaccination rate of 65+'er than New York, so that is slowing deaths to some extent.

Florida's 65+ residents are following science moreso than New Yorkers, or Californians.

It's not all about YOU, beachmouse. We ALL advocate for ourselves and our own safety. We ALL make our choices. WE are not FORCING anything on YOU. YOU have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to FORCE anything on us.

I DO stand with you on the Karen thing, though. I have found that to be sexist from the start.

the excess deaths were because Florida hospitals were having to turn away non-covid patients

...that's the 'reality' of the 'situation' that is far more 'dire'.....accent on drama words

""What we are seeing is just a tremendous amount of patients coming in. The other day, our emergency room had a 12-hour wait. Almost every hospital in the city is on diversion, meaning they don't have room to take transfer patients," Paryani said. "Patients who need complex care simply can't access it. This kind of strain is something we've never seen before.""

This post didn't age well, did it? FL is now #3 per capita in cases.

This is not (necessarily) a knock on FL - the point is that the situation changes - the virus is contagious - and all population centers will not suffer at the same rate or the same time - so it's kinda silly to gloat or criticize.

^ Don't know how that can be true. The CDC covid tracker shows Florida pretty much back to normal, very few cases/deaths currently.

There does seem to be a geographic seasonal behavioral environmental component to these waves, based on some 18 months of experience now; late summer/back-to-school indications bear that out so far and the next six months should continue to do so, especially as the mitigative effects of the mitigative shots continue to wane and policymakers continue to babble ill-advised, ill-timed, divisive and confusing "guidance".

Human beings whine, complain, criticize, blame, infight, exploit and gloat as a matter of habit, in between being born and dying.

Human beings are silly creatures, while their lives last.

Did you expect better from them?

Well...no. But I didn't expect it to be demonstrated so enthusiastically.

Which is why I think we should be thinking of this as a country, and not having all of this in-fighting about states. We don't have closed borders between states.

Of course, given the large land mass, different regions would have to do different things at different times, but there should still be some unified approach.
