Hi everyone,

My 80 year old mom lives in Florida, and her car has been licensed in Florida for many years. We just got back from a trip to Montana, where she was born, and one our relatives gave my mom a couple of old Montana license plates. One of the plates is going on the Club Car, but...

My mom wants the other MT plate on the front of her car, but I told her there was no way that placing on her car a real, if out of date, license plate from another state could possibly be legal. Well, her neighbors disagree and they say Florida doesn't care. I cannot locate anything on the Florida DMV site that addresses this specific situation. Please advise.

Thanks!

If you call the local police department, they will tell you that it's technically not allowed. However, it's not something they actively enforce.

Back when I lived in Florida, I put expired out of state plates on the front of my old vehicles before and law enforcement never gave me a second look. I have a license plate collection and used to like to rotate some of them onto my vehicles. Coincidentally, I had an old Montana plate that I used to put on the front of my old truck because I thought the blue color looked good with my truck's paint job.

It's one of those things they can ticket you for if they pull you over for something else and really want to sock it to you.

I, personally would not put in there anything but a preferred Sports Team Plate.

No sweat there.

Thanks for the guidance everyone. We found a novelty Montana plate that should satisfy mom and be legal.

I still -- to this very day (and for the past six years) have my long-expired Connecticut vanity plate on the front of my Florida car. Florida does not care. And yes, I have been pulled over in that time (in Florida and also in Georgia). If it is illegal, it is not enforced.

It's illegal, but as an officer, I would never enforce it. That is cool as heck! Any cop who would jam up mama over that is a dooooooosh.

I see it all the time in the retirement community I live in. There is one parked outside on the street right now. Utah plate on front Florida on the back. Another one up the street has a Washington State plate on front. Evidently it can't be important to Florida, because these people have been here for several years. I think I will put my Oregon plate on the front of my Kia.
