but I heard the liberals say this isn't happening....doesn't even exist

"Sarasota school board vice chair Tom Edwards this week proudly bragged that there are school board members who are “woke” and “working from the inside” to indoctrinate children, making the remarks ahead of the August 23 primary, as voters have a chance to flip the school board in favor of pro-parents and pro-students conservatives."

“We are here. We’re working to be have your back. You need to know we have your backs,” he continued, bragging about how woke school board members are working from the “inside” to advance these radical left agendas.

“And we’re working in the best strategic spot because we’re on the inside or working from the inside. And it’s from my point of view, I’ve spent not quite two years to earn credibility and to earn trust. That is a long, slow process. But I’m not the only one in the state of Florida,” Edwards continued, asserting that there are coalitions “formed to protect.”

Context is everything. They're working from the inside to protect - you, the parents and teachers, who want nothing more than the kids to be educated, taught actual history rather than revisionist "white nationalist" "quasi-religious" history. Actual science, rather than bible-based rhetoric. Civics, rather than qanon conspiracies and hatred. Background of current events, rather than the one-sided talking points (such as is in the Breitbart link). Context that supports content.

They're "woke," in that they understand the bigger picture and aren't blithely and ignorantly tumbling down the rabbit hole of alt-right conspiracy theories, antisemitism, fascism, neo-nazi agenda that promotes ONLY white evangelicals who claim to be christians but are nothing more than the spawn of hatred, lies, and fear of "other."

In short, there are still lots of teachers who just want to teach, rather than be tools of the hate-machine.

Are you one of them? You've got their talking points down, and are pushing the narrative despite that none of what you claim is happening.

So wait - there is no recent ban on over 40% of submitted textbooks in Florida schools? There is no ban on teachers explaining to students about how not all households have a woman for a mommy and a man for a daddy, if a student asks or brings it up? (especially when they make cards for Mothers' Day or Fathers' Day) There's no ban on teaching ACTUAL history in history and civics classes, because white students might get their feelings hurt if black folks complain that the white ancestors enslaved their ancestors?

Because I'm pretty sure I heard the governor proudly announce and/or post all these things live on National news and/or his own social media feeds after signing the documents that did exactly that.

Remember when going to school meant learning about reading, writing and arithmetic?

Remember when getting an education in the basics was the goal of teachers and the various administrative employees, not political agendas?

Regarding the 40% of books banned as mentioned by another poster here, everyone should be open to hearing the rest of the story. "The Florida Department of Education review of 132 math books has led to the banning of more than 40% of them due to what the state calls “prohibited topics” including critical race theory and social-emotional learning."

A local Tampa news station mentioned 2 examples of what the state deemed inappropriate topics in the math books --- information regarding climate change, including publisher's views on the subject & exercises using Al Gore and Rush Limbaugh. What does climate change, Al Gore or Rush Limbaugh have to do with MATH?

Reviewers flagged almost 5900 pages in the various textbooks as inappropriate, including the following so called joke (which again, has no place in a text book): “Why do Jewish divorces cost so much? Because they’re worth it.”

Regarding the Sarasota county board member: "Sarasota school board vice chair Tom Edwards this week proudly bragged that there are school board members who are “woke” and “working from the inside” to indoctrinate children, making the remarks ahead of the August 23 primary, as voters have a chance to flip the school board in favor of pro-parents and pro-students conservatives."

and

“I just wanted to give a little reassurance that here in the state of Florida, there are school board members that are woke. We’re here!” Edwards told attendees of a “Support Our Schools” forum.

“And we’re working. We have your back. You need to know we have your backs,” Edwards continued. “And we’re working in the best strategic spot because we’re on the inside. We are working from the inside.”

Edwards said the quiet part out loud. Indoctrination. Woke agendas.

Again, what does any of that have to do with teaching children to read, write and do math? Teachers are supposed to be educators, not social justice warriors. Schools should not become culture war battlegrounds.

And I say this as a person that belongs to neither political party, a person that merely wants our taxpayer dollars to deliver quality education to the students.

It was also always history, which has its share of controversies about different events- see how many conservatives want to paint slavery as ‘really not that bad’ in their state standards.

We’ve also always taught science, which the fundamentalists have issues with because it often conflicts with their very narrow literal interpretation of the Bible and their ‘young Earth’ hypothesis.

And reading is another huge minefield once you start getting into middle school and what you read. I mean controversy over assigned reading in really nothing new. The debate over the appropriateness of assigning ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ has only been going on for a couple decades now.

The difference is that now the conservatives are also targeting To Kill a Mockingbird because it might make racists feel bad if they read it.

History, physical science, social science, civics, geography, world history, American history, psychology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry.

Meanwhile, Florida ranks 3rd as the state with the most frequent book banning. That means only two other states out of 50, that ban books in their school systems more than they do. If 47 other states don't ban books as often, then maybe Florida might consider that - they ban too many books.

I certainly do not want any critical pedagogy in the K-12 schools, but I am also concerned that a very vocal minority will insist upon seeing such literally everywhere, much in the way the far-left has consigned everything to their anti-enlightenment, illiberal, identitarian view of the world. In so doing, the right-wing will simply become the inverse version of Woke derangement, and the transmission of knowledge by and between generations will select only for failure modes. A real tragedy to befall the children, to be sure. It's time to act like adults again.
