I'm glad I didn't spend my childhood and working years in Florida. But I'm glad to spend my retirement here.

It was much better when i was a kid sid. Half the state nate was yet to be built up and the weather was much better then with real winters and real rain in the summer. The weather changed for good since 1990.

Florida is a big state…where in Florida do you live? Also I noticed you used L.A. as your basis for comparison. The Los Angeles metropolitan area would be considered a “premier” area with some of the best amenities California has to offer and that extends to health care service and research.

A fair comparison would be the Miami Metropolitan area. Do you live in the Miami metro? I live in West Palm Beach and just in WPB we have

Mount Sinai: https://www.mountsinai.org/locations...est-palm-beach

NYU Langone: https://nyulangone.org/locations/nyu...est-palm-beach

University of Miami Health System: https://umiamihealth.org/en/location...est-palm-beach

And we’re the smallest county population wise in South Florida. Your blanket statements regarding “Florida” healthcare certainly don’t apply to South Florida.

Got sick in LA and went to a cedars Sinai related practice. Doctors are Smart, efficient, up on the latest advances, help you schedule your tests (florida they just tell me to get an xray!) call up their associates to get you in quicker for a specialist or for a quick consult. Script filled immediately.
Computer systems that actually everyone knows how to use - rarely happens in florida for some odd reason my name or phone number is ALWAYS entered wrong in the "system". Granted I have an uncommon name, but accurate data entry seems to be unavailable skill for most office staff.
And a doctor who calls to followup the next day to see how you are doing and doesn't tell you to make an appointment in to discuss the test results.
It is a different experience but it is what I'm used to and I it exists outside of my normal NE area.

I have not had that experience in Florida. Maybe its just my bad luck. I do ask for recommendations and others do rave. I agree I think my expectations are out of line with the typical service.
Do you think I am seeing the wrong doctors?

Curious, where in South Florida do you live? And where in NJ did you move from?

2) Why is NJ such a focal point of this thread? Florida apologists act like there are only 4 states in the country (FL, NY, NJ, CA). And when you mention why Florida sucks, they will say "At least its not those places". There are lots of good cities and states in this country that aren't on coasts. The mid-west is underrated. And possibly living in a major city in some of the square states could give a city experience with affordable CoL.

Most of my regular doctors are associated with Columbia Presbyterian in Ny or in NNJ. I have used doctors in Sarasota most recently but have equally bad experience in delray/boca. I have not had good luck in Sarasota at all. Horrible.
Maybe Miami is up more what I’m used to.
Cedar Sinai was wonderful. Top notch. I was so impressed considering I didn’t have a relationship. Just my singular experience. Ymmv.
Obviously others have a much different and more positive outcome.

I do believe it is worthwhile to compare medical services between states. I wonder if others whom rave about Florida healthcare have ever experienced treatment in other similiar communities in other states.
Yea I judge, isn’t that what should be doing about my health? We have to advocate for ourselves.
High quality healthcare is an important aspect of where to live. Especially as you get older and sickness and illness is more common. I can’t apologize for wanting great options and access. I am willing to pay for great if it’s available.

What does "real winters" mean, in a Florida context? What kind of winters were those?

Look at 1980-82-82-83-84-85-86. With lows of 19f to 24f year after year in Tampa and highs in the 30's on Xmas day of 83. Since the planet has warmed up so much we don't get fronts anymore like we did years ago bro. Look at our record hot falls since 2011 and compare them to the 1970's and 80's. Same for our summer time pattern where we used to get rain on the gulf and now never do anymore thanks to a never ending west flow thanks to a displace ridge axis.

Some of you may live long enough to see 90's year round in FL and see much less rain year round as the planet boils away. I have had 3 years in a row of rainfall totals under 30" living right on the gulf while peeps just inland get 60". My rainfall has been less and less jess over the years.

This area will be like the ME area of the world out past 30 years. Out past 70 years and most sea life will start to die off and out past 140 years this won't be a fun place to live anymore. ANOTHER RECORD BROKEN IN TAMPA with a 90f. We now see 90's in Nov as normal since 2015 as the rate of heating just keep ramping up. And that is the truth ruth.

Well, for what it's worth, we got 3.5 inches of rain just last night, with 58 MPH gusts during a storm lasting maybe 2 hours in our neck of the woods. Our tarped roof did not prevent water from coming in through the ceiling during the storm, and we spent some of that time running around with containers trying to catch the leaks. Lordy, how I wish I could send the rain your way.

Will have to try and cover those areas of the not-so-great tarp job over with more tarp or something as we're forecast for more rain next week. Wish I could send that your way too.

Fortunately we signed a contract for a roof replacement just yesterday. They gave us a 2-4 week timeframe before they get to us. I think that is pretty good these days.

Seeing some of the backlash, I think I could've been a bit more nuanced in my initial post, and conveyed that south FL isn't for everyone, rather than implying it's universally.

I also could've mentioned some of the positives like weather, racial/cultural diversity, proximity to beaches, etc.

I checked back at my original points. I revoke #9, and #8 there's some subjectivity in what metrics we should use to judge it. But looking at the rest of the points, which of them are wrong?

Can I really say the income to rent ratio is good?

Can I really say that there's a lot of geographical diversity and you get a wildly different aesthetic going from one town to the next? Can I really say that the driving experience is positive or that the transportation is good?

Can I really say there's a lot of things to do for the under 50 crowd?

These are things you should have vetted prior to moving there. You clearly didn't.
