Here in NJ, we drive an hour or two through brutal traffic to get to the beach. Public beaches are much less crowded and much more accessible in that part of the gulf coast. So it was nice to venture out of ac to a short drive to the water.

I was in Destin, Niceville, and Pensacola for over a week about a week and a half ago. The temp was in the upper 80's and my wife and I didn't think it was that bad. We are living in kansas city and yesterday and today it is more hot and humid than it was there all week. We also noticed a constant breeze off the gulf when we were there, which was nice. We are warm weather people though, and are moving to Niceville next May. We HATE the cold. Kansas City has the worst of both, hot and cold, it seems.

That depends on what you mean by oppressive.

How about 103F and 100% humidity?

If you're inside and walk outside it's like being on Venus, walking into an oven, getting hit with a blast of heat that makes you want to go back inside.

I've been to Florida in June, July, and August. After last year, I vowed I would never go back again in August!!! It is hot and it is humid. Glasses get fogged up from walking out of airconditioning and into the heat. I was drenched in sweat before I could even get from the house to the car in the driveway because it was so humid.

We get a place on the ocean every year in the general vicinity you're asking about--not too far from Destin. Obviously it's bearable for some people because they live and work there. Humidity can be just as bad in the midwest, but you don't have the ocean to jump into to cool off. Do breezes keep the humidity down inland? I don't think so.

January through April is generally very nice -- even cold, temps can drop into the teens (F).

Things start to warm up in May, and by June you get the Venus effect described above. High heat + maxed out humidity. This continues through the beginning of October most years. Autumn here is wonderful.

The only upside is with that kind of heat and humidity, you will get afternoon thunderstorms - possibly violent ones - that tend to cool things off for the evening. But they are typically scattered, so not everyone gets a shower.

Yes, there is a temp difference. Niceville is generally 10 degrees cooler in the summer than say...Crestview which is 18 miles inland from Niceville.
By the way..Niceville has been a joy to live in and raise our son. Although the Fl. summers are a bit much for us ( we are moving to the Pacific NW at the end of June!!) I have found this little town to be a great family place
and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to a place to raise their families.
