I heard that Ft. Lauderdale was unfriendly. Any friendly beach towns for a 10 day stay.

Ft. Lauderdale is plenty friendly. As the winter comes into play, you'll want to keep your vacation to South Florida. NoFla can get quite cold in the winter.

Ft. Lauderdale is friendly, whoever told you that probably expects a red carpet to be rolled out for them. Pretty much anywhere will have lots of friendly people if you are friendly first, even South Beach, Miami.

There are several. If you want more of a city environment with lots of nightlife then Fort Lauderdale is probably your best bet. If you prefer it without lots of nightlife (yet still active) then smaller cities like Clearwater Beach, St Pete Beach or Sarasota would be better bets in terms of friendliness. If you want a true "beach town" with a friendly vibe, you can't go wrong with places like Indian Rocks Beach, Anna Maria Island or Fernandina Beach.
