After all this time, and with all the internet resources available, why in the world do people move here thinking it will be cheaper to live here than elsewhere?

Probably because people still think is 2000. Or they think that it is the same prices when their parents retired to Florida. I have to say that compared to some places like California, Florida is still cheap.

Depending on where you relocate to it still maybe. Forget about anywhere near the coast. After the devastating hurricanes insurance is going to be higher. They didn't make enough coastal property to go around. The beaches I played on as a child had only seagrapes, seaoats, crabs, and gulls. Now they are condos. Small towns in the central just might be still a lot less than some places. The reality is FL is now a place to escape the winter weather of the north and midwest. Not a place to live cheap. Guess we really need to define cheaper too. Cheaper than what, where. In my cyberspace travels looking at regional economics it seems that every place I find that has it all comes at a steep price. Supply and Demand at work. Just my take on things.

It maybe just a lot of wishful thinking too. I think that a lot of my generation also are just not up to speed on using these internet resources. They tend to listen to developers and promoters. Infomercial half truths have there snares and victims too.

I came here from NJ in 2004, although I did grow up in Florida. Except for the cost of houses, I did not notice much of a change in the cost of living here as opposed to NJ. Groceries actually cost more here as does gasoline. I also noticed that the pay to cost of living ratio was better in NJ than it is here in Florida. It was not always this way.

Depending on the area of Florida, the houses are a lot cheaper than they are here where I live. A 3/2 house that costs $100k in Palm Bay would cost $200k+ up here.

It is compared to many places. Especially if you can make the same money in FL that you do in the NE.

still cheaper then most but nowhere near as cheap as it was in the 80`s

My mom got a house for 59,000 no way you will find that now.

We have sales tax. It is state income tax that we don't have. Yet.
