Definitely the Gulf Coast. Just an FYI~a lot of the southeast is suffering with high unemployment so Fla. isn't isolated. But many other parts of the country have a very low unemployment rate. Things will change there eventually.

Nothing out of the ordinary about them.

I like the Gulf Coast, especially the Suncoast Region and Southwest Florida. They have a lot to offer. I would say Gulf Coast hands down.

What are the possibilities of teaching positions on either coast in Florida?

Teachers are getting laid off all over. Just so you know anyone can sub in FL, hard to believe but you don't even need a college degree.

They have more subs than they need, and you are looking at about $9 an hour as a sub.

An interesting question...

Which sea has the more shallow waters ( < 4ft depth) near the beach ?
That is a benefit for children & elderly.
Also, sharks don't raid shallow waters so much...
And they are warmer...

I would agree with you that it's tough finding a teaching position but I don't agree with you about teachers not needing a college degree. Simply not true, or at least it's not true in most counties. For a campus aide, etc you don't need a college degree but for any type of teaching position you do.

Here's what Sarasota county requires:

Minimum Qualifications

Teaching positions that require a Florida Educator’s Certificate:
  • You must apply (https://certify.fldoe.org/publicweb/default.aspx) or have applied for Florida Certification to be considered for employment as a teacher in the Sarasota County School District.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a fully accredited college or university.
  • Minimum 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Substitute Instructional Application Requirements

Attention Substitute Applicants: Effective immediately, the Human Resources Department will only process candidates to be substitutes who:
  • performed their student teaching in our schools or
  • are current Florida certified teachers.
The substitute hiring process is outlined below.
Applicants may not begin substituting until all of the steps below have been completed.

Application
  • Qualifications
    1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a fully accredited college or university.
    2. Minimum 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Online Instructional Application
Required Documents
  • Resume – Must be current with no time gaps
  • References- Three (3) references required from supervisors/administrators as noted below. Supervisors must be identified in the Work Experience section and/or Professional References section of the application. Must be completed on district forms. (Click to download: Instructional Reference Form) One of the three references must be from current supervisor.
    1. Experienced teachers: provide references from current and most recent administrator(s) (principals, assistant principals).
    2. Pre-graduates: provide references from Supervisor of Interns, Supervising Teacher, and Major Professor.
    3. For non-education majors: provide references from current and most recent administrator(s) / supervisor(s).
    4. Previous Sarasota County School Board Employees: provide references from current/most recent administrator(s) / supervisors(s) and a reference from the most recent SCSB supervisor / administrator.
  • Official Bachelor’s Transcripts with degree conferral date. Photocopies are not accepted. Foreign diplomas/transcripts must be translated and evaluated. For applicants who have not yet graduated see additional information.
  • Security Background Check Form – Must be signed and dated where indicated and all four pages completed. (Click to download: Security Background Check Form).
Applicants should contact the Human Resources Department to verify that all information has been received and their status is “Recommend” in the Applicant Tracking System before proceeding to additional requirements below.
Additional Requirements
  • Provide a valid Florida teaching certificate and proof of having taught for a minimum of one year in a U.S. public or private school within the preceding five years (Proof documents include: employment contract, evaluation or verification of employment) OR complete the District’s Substitute Endorsement Program.
  • Provide a valid Florida teaching certificate OR apply for the Sarasota County Substitute Certificate on the basis of your Bachelor’s degree ($20.00 fee which is payable by Cashier’s Check or Money Order only.)
  • Complete pre-employment processing. (ViewPre-Employment Processing)
  • Register for and attend Substitute Orientation and Sub-Finder Training. All paperwork must be completed 5 days prior to orientation and you must attend before you accept a substitute teaching assignment. It is your responsibility to verify with Human Resources that you are approved to attend Substitute Orientation prior to attending.

Applicants may not begin substituting until all of the above steps have been completed.

I would say that the gulf side has more sandbars and shallower waters in general than the Atlantic side. If you're talking shark attacks, the Atlantic side has far more attacks than the gulf side. One reason you get more attacks over there is the amount of surfers. Surfers mimic a wounded animal and in turn look like lunch to a hungry shark. Most of the sharks that are off the coast of New Smyrna are Tigers, Spinners, Bull, Reef and Blacktips. Ponce Inlet is specifically known to be pretty active with sharks. You really don't have that great surfing on the gulf side unless a storms brewing. The gulf side is also much warmer than the Atlantic side. http://www.underwatertimes.com/news....id=10863094725

New Smyrna Beach over in Volusia County on the Atlantic side is the "Shark Capital of the World" North America's top shark-attack beaches - USATODAY.com But you have more chance in winning the lottery than getting attacked by a shark.
