Stay away from the areas that are North of US 98 @ Crystal Lake. Mostly is section 8 housing and bad news.

The The West side of US 98/Bartow road is still pretty decent.

Once they tore down The Washington Park Projects, Lakeland is becoming a melting pot for crime. Section 8 folks were displaced and now are moving into nice neighborhoods. Crime goes up of course. I'm a victim of the mess myself. Our neighborhood is going down the tubes. Two section 8 families moved in. Two weeks later stolen cars, and three homes broken into. That has not happened for as long as the 10 years I've lived here.

I was just there. It's beautiful, but the place is skewed towards the over 60 years of age set.

It's nothing like what it used to be sadly.

It's much better facility-wise and shopping-wise.

Crime has gotten out of control here.

Does that include downtown? It seemed very safe while I was visiting there.

I have never had a problem Downtown. It's pretty much safe down there until the late hours of the evening, as with most places.

I've lived here all my life and am disgusted with what Lakeland is becoming with the Section-8 housing out of control, crime and the recklessness of the city & Lakeland Electric.

Now is it better than Tampa/Orlando/Winter Haven? Yes. I think by far.

MightyHd, what neighborhood do you live in? We live just south of downtown near Lake Hollingsworth and we have great neighbors - all of them have lived here at least 20 years. So far this has been a beautiful and safe neighborhood to live - I think the only crime has been a couple of car breakins over the last year (people didn't lock them up) but it's always quiet around here even though we live near Florida Ave. What do you mjean about the "recklessness of the city?"

We enjoy all the free festivals and music here in downtown Lakeland - the first Fridays are fun for all ages, and they get some great bands on the 3rd Fridays - it's so much fun! We also love Lakeside Village, the great open-air mall they just built - we go there to eat and just walk around.

LuLu - yes, there are older people here, but there are a lot of YOUNGER people, too - I think it depends where you go and at what time of day. Have you been on the path around Lake Hollingsworth? You will find TONS of young people all the time, biking, jogging, skating, etc. Florida Southern College is on this lake. It's really nice.

I agree, it is more of a retirement community, if you don't mind living extremely far from the ocean in Florida.

I would be hesitant to say that. While it's not full of night clubs and party halls, it's still got plenty to do. Lakeland has really picked up the pace with Malls & shopping over the past few years. It's a Bedroom Community to Tampa/Orlando.
