My daughter and I are planning to move to the Lakeland area in October. I recently retired but my daughter will be looking for a job there. What is the employment situation in Lakeland? Would it be better for us to move to another city in Florida? Can anyone give me some information about this?

Try these sites for Florida Info www.stateofflorida.com www.florida-relocation.com www.flgov.com unless you know the area...and or have friends down there...I would suggest that you either visit before you rent/buy something...or that you consider an extended hotel option that offers a larger space/kitchen/etc.... this option will give you time to look the area over before you sign a lease and/or buy something in an area that you might not like...

Your daughter needs to be realistic about jobs prospects. I don't know what she does, but jobs in Florida are tough to find, and wages may not be what you are used to.

It's amazing to me to hear that jobs are hard to come by. I know it's true, but for so many years it's been employers complaining about not being able to find work.
The other day my wife took her mother to the eye doctor here in Venice. Apparently they attempted to recruit her.
Most industries have slowed down, but I think health care is still hiring.

There are jobs around, but people won't do them. I talked to guy who had no job and was complaining. I told him I saw a help wanted sign just an hour earlier at the 7-11. His response was that he was in construction. Duh....no job, or a job. I guess he would rather complain than see a paycheck.

I won't waste my time with these places like 7-11 too, these kind of jobs are the kind you'd still look around for a better one to come by. Too embarrasing to put these on your resume, they mean almost nothing to future employers. If I'd were an employer reading an application, the 2 things that counts from lowend jobs are how reliable you show up for work, and how often you change jobs (low turnovers).

You'd be better off taking classes at college to earn your degree while you wait for an opportunity.

Florida still need teachers and nurses...those need college courses too...

I may be crazy, but money is money, and if you need income, you don't turn down jobs. It makes no sense at all to me to get food stamps and lose your car because you don't want to put a job on your resume.

School budgets are being cut and people being laid off. The district where I work is now saying that unless you already work for the district, you will only be hired for one year.

You don't want to come here and work for a school district, IF they will even hire you. If a teacher has been cut, they will place somebody with seniority before they will hire somebody new. Fact.

What kind of work does your daughter do? Lakeland is a beautiful place to live. Like everywhere unemployment is up, but that doesn't mean there are NO jobs available, depending on what her experience is. There are actually quite a few large employers in the area, and yes health care always has a lot of openings. Also, Publix, the south's large grocery chain is based here and they are AGGRESSIVELY expanding - they just bought most of the Albertson stores and also plan to build more new stores, so there will be opportunities right there.

Good luck to you!

You will find cost of living a bit better in this area as well
