Look at this link Florida is not as bad for skin cancer as you make it out to be.....

Cancer - Comparing Skin Cancer in Different U.S. States

I`m not saying that Florida sun is not bad but looking at this map you can get skin cancer anywhere even up north and some of the more northern states have more cases then Florida.

And comparing going out in the sun with drinking contaminated water is a bad comparison not even close.
Alphaman, I apologize if my comments struck you the wrong way. I did not intend to offend you or for that matter, Florida in general. I think you took my comment about the drinking water to literally (I am at work and just saw Erin Brokovich on television). Anyways, I in no way meant to compare drinking carcinogenic water with going out in the sun. Instead my point was that people sometimes do not take into account sun exposure and other variables when researching a place to live. For example, people check things like air quality and level of crime of new towns to gauge the level of safety and health within a community. I was making a general statement that sometimes I feel the risk of skin cancer is often overlooked, I should have worded it differently.

Thank you for that link! I have not seen that report up until today. Quite interesting data! I have always thought that the environment and social life in Florida would make people more susceptible to skin cancer. With most cities and towns in close vicinity to an ocean, one would assume that residents of Florida spend much of their time on the beach soaking up the sun, more so than New Englanders. You spend enough time on the train tracks you are bound to get hit. Fortunately, the rate of skin cancer is relatively low compared to other states, how interesting. The report from the CDC is going to make for some healthy discussion at work tonight!

Good Luck I know you'll be happy with your decision to relocate to Florida.
I agree with FLBob. Go with Sarasota, you'll be in 7th heaven!!

Abacoa. Just north of the WestPalm area on the east coast. Beautiful suburb area for the descrimining taste. Boca Raton is very posh. Nothing that you need that you cannot buy in Boca. Limos, Hummers and Mercedes are the common. What's a ford or chevy??LOL

I don't understand your outrage. Yes I already had skin cancer up north and didn't even live here. My dermatologist warned me to wear protective clothing etc. before moving here. The dermatologist down here never goes out in the sun either and said the same thing. Women in their young 20s are contracting serious skin cancers from tanning beds. Some are walking around with disfigured faces from it. Maybe you don't even watch tv.

You think it's a joke but it can kill, yes. The OP is a physician and is contemplating moving here young with having kids here and talking about the beach. Not even talking about the wrinkles you can get from sun exposure. He's not an uninformed person and in his excitement about relocating might have not even thought of it until he was stuck here financially.

Sorry but some of you Florida people really have serious persecution complexes.

I never said skin cancer was a joke, please do not put words in my mouth.

And it`s not just Florida people goto any state and talk negative and you will get people reacting the same.

And I`m not Florida people I was born in the NE.

I was just expressing the fact that skin cancer is not exclusive to the sun belt states only as the poster made it sound like to me.

OK I read the link. First of all, interpreting CDC raw data on your own isn't a great idea. How would you know WHY certain stats are the way they are? In my opinion, it's just representative of reporting, not risk.

You're not even taking into consideration all the Florida snow birds who go home during the summer and have their biopsies there. uh hello?

There are alot of variables such as reporting systems, sociological factors such as demographic of light skinned people (even though dark skinned people can get skin cancer too), poor people or seniors that don't even go to the doctor for skin, or who have a lung cancer "report" that was actually a melanoma that metastasized, quality of care meaning experience of the doctor who isn't a skin expert, and TANNING BEDS

I can name you 15 out of 80 coworkers who TAN for years in PA using tanning beds. What about all the seniors down here, has anybody compared populations to see if it's logical that NEW HAMPSHIRE is LOWER than Florida for a specific reason? Probably not. Given that 23 percent of the pop is seniors and I dont see them all laying out, maybe the rate is statistically significant in other ways, I have no idea.

Not to mention the screening techniques.

I had my skin screened by my family doc for a year when I cancelled my derm appointment and don't you know he MISSED my two suspicious areas that turned out to be basal cell. One right under my eye. My derm saw it as soon as she greeted me first words out of her mouth.

The truest warning to protect yourself from skin cancer continues to remain the UV index and you can judge for yourself:

EPA SunWise: UV Index

Here's a 5 year old child with a melanoma in Arizona. Even the article said "she didn't spend time outside" which is erroneous because the sun reflects IN from bouncing off concrete outside anyway and through car windows. Her doctor stated "this is a very serious issue".

FOXNews.com - Arizona Girl, 5, Diagnosed With Deadly Melanoma Skin Cancer - Health News | Current Health News | Medical News

I'm not running all over the internet but there are plenty of scary Florida stats on the internet. Feel free to ignore them if that's your style

My derm from PA went to a conference in Fl and wore Coolibar clothing the entire time including snorkling. Her sister here walks on the beach at sunrise not noon. My derm here said the same thing. I think I'll trust THEM, with their years of expert medical training and keeping up with the literature not somebody's opinion on the internet, no offense.

Like I said, at fifty five I'll likely die of other causes but if I were in my twenties I'd factor the lifestyle thing in. Fortunately in those years you're at work during the day but I got freckles in one month of living here WITH sunscreen.

Ok,no problem. I just read on your link that the rate in WOMEN was statistically HIGHER. That's because they're dopes, all wanting to be TAN ,,,,especially when you figure men "should" be higher since they work outside more....

That's why I don't put alot of faith in just the reported numbers.

I will read the links and do agree that we have a very high UV index and I do realize there are probably so many factors that can contribute to this..

However I do not want to hijack this poster thread anymore and hope they do the research before coming down......Nice talking with you maybe we can chat more if we cross again...

Have a good night.

I wear shirts when I work outside and a hat and UV sunglasses.

Boca Raton, Parkland, Highland Beach. Two huge hospitals and lots of cancer care treatment centers. Doctors offices galore. Culture and big enough city yet not overly busy and huge. Best wishes, Doc!
