It takes very little work and what was a hotbox is now a shaded home. Most homes around here have gravel in the yard which is bad for the trees (makes roots alkaline) and takes endless work to keep clean. Meanwhile all I have to do is trim branches that rub the house and burn the dead branches in the generator. There is one patch that grows grass in the rainy season but the rest of the year it's just dead.
Good for you, tallrick! Wish more would follow your example...

I have done 50% of my parent's back yard like that but the Cuban descent people who moved behind them and have that balloon mortgage have been complaining about it repeatedly to Team Metro. They have even yelled at me when I do yard maintenance and threatened my parents with legal action or physical harm. There are a lot of arbophobic people in Miami so if you try and grow trees you will encounter the occasional nut job out there. As for me I keep a gun handy whenever I have to do yard maintenance at my parent's home in case those people try and start something.

Ok, so they just fell from the existing Pine Trees then...or...can you actually buy pine needles and spread them around ? Does the grass still continue to grow underneath the pine needles ? It would be nice not to have any grass to cut. Thanks.

Not if it`s really shady and lot of pine needles no grass will grow, no need to buy pine needles with established trees they drop tons.

My Mother inlaw uses them for mulch.

Pine straw mulch is available to purchase. I don't think you'll find it in a Home Depot, but a local garden center may be able to get it for you. It comes in bales like hay.
