TALLAHASSEE -- Republican leaders in the Florida House are floating a radical tax overhaul that would eliminate property taxes paid by homeowners in favor of a 3-cent increase to the state sales tax.

Critics argue that the sales tax is too regressive, because lower-income residents pay a higher percentage of their incomes in sales taxes than do wealthier individuals.

What's more, they say, a property-tax-for-sales-tax trade would offer little or no benefit to renters, who tend to earn less than homeowners, while sharply increasing the sales tax they pay.

This and other problems will mean the propsal will never pass. I can see the homestead exemption being raised to $50k however and do away with save our homes and lower the property taxes so we all pay a fair share instead of those with a "cap" that pay artifically low taxes

There are a lot of advantages to a proposal like this.

First of all, it would benefit a lot of renters. Renters rent cause they can't afford homes. Why can't they afford homes? Taxes and Insurance! You eliminate taxes from the equation and a large number of people will be able to afford homes.

Also, many people with SOH protection are prisoners in their own home. If they move, their property taxes would go up by multiples. This eliminates that problem as well. Anyone could move anywhere in the state without worrying about taxes.

YEAH! FAIR TAX! I am a big fan of it!

THINK!!! Most people have no idea how much they REALLY pay in taxes. That is because there are so many embedded taxes that you can't see. We WOULD revolt if we truly knew just how much we do pay. That is their stategy - to keep us in the dark and dangle carrots like this. Sales tax is already way too high.

They need to double Homestead Exemption and decrease the property taxes! Our taxes keep going up, up, up. We have to vote down all tax increases. It will never end.

Go get your phone bill. Highlight all the taxes. Add it up. Do the same with other bills. And those are just the ones you can SEE. My $129 bundle of phone, long distance, & DSL is going UP EVERY MONTH. It is now at about $189 month. Do the math. Approx 47% in tax and junk charges.

Tax increase? No thank you!!!!

100% agree! We would definitely be on the losing end here. Way too many hidden taxes now. People don't realize it when they are being "nickled and dimed."

Add me to the "no thank you" list!

10% typical sales tax rate? Bad idea.

Now perhaps a reduction in property and a 1% increase could hold possibly work.

Definitely limit reductions to primary residences.
