We are looking at moving to the area (stationed at Hurlburt). We've been looking at rental homes online and there doesn't seem to be a lot of rentals. With all of the military around we thought there would be a much bigger rental market. We've looked at craigslist, realtor.com and some local sites. Not a lot to choose from. Do most military own their homes rather than rent? Doesn't seem worth buying in this market.

Some more listings here:

Traffic on US 98 is bad enough that a lot of people who work in Ft. Walton Beach proper are willing to pay a premium to not live west of Hurlburt. However if you're working at Hurlburt, the commute issues aren't so bad from Navarre, Holley by the Sea or even Gulf Breeze to there, and you'll get more for your money in those areas than renting in FWB. (If public schools are an issue, school quality in those areas and FWB are pretty similar- above average with the really good ones found in either Gulf Breeze, or, if you don't mind a longish commute, Niceville to the northeast of Ft. Walton)

Those Santa Rosa County areas sometimes get lumped in with Pensacola instead of FWB so it helps to look for real estate listings in both of those areas to get the full picture.
